Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Millard Willson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When I was 22, fresh out of college with a degree in graphic design and photography, I decided to take a leap that would completely change my life. It was 2005—before Instagram, before photography and design became the oversaturated fields they are today—and I felt this pull to chase the California dream.
I had grown up in a small town, surrounded by family and friends, but I knew deep down that if I wanted to see how far I could go, I had to take a risk. So I did. After waiting tables at a steakhouse, I had saved about $2,000—just enough to make the move. Seven weeks later, I packed my little car, said goodbye to everything familiar, and drove across the country to California.
When I arrived, reality hit me fast. I ended up living in a five-bedroom house with nine roommates, sleeping on an air mattress for six months. My “desk” was a $9 stool from Ikea. Social media wasn’t really a thing back then; Craigslist was the go-to. That’s where I found my first freelance design jobs and small photography gigs. Slowly, I started piecing together a business, one opportunity at a time.
Looking back now, that risk taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and grit. It showed me that you don’t need perfect conditions or all the answers before you begin—you just need the courage to start.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a photographer and creative business owner based in San Diego. For nearly two decades, I’ve been capturing stories through images that blend artistry with authenticity. What started as a passion has grown into a thriving business where I specialize in event photography, brand photography, and lifestyle portraits for families.
Through my work, I like to think of myself as more than just someone with a camera—I help people preserve moments that matter, whether it’s capturing the energy of a corporate event, the personality behind a brand, or the everyday magic of family life. My images are about connection, authenticity, and creating visuals that feel alive long after the moment has passed.
What sets my brand apart is the balance of professionalism and heart. With event and corporate clients, I know how important it is to deliver polished, on-brand images that elevate their marketing and storytelling. With families, I create a relaxed environment where kids can be themselves and parents can let go of perfection. My goal is always to capture the genuine spirit of the people in front of me.
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built over the years—many clients have become repeat customers and even friends. That loyalty means I’ve done my job well: not just taking beautiful photos, but creating an experience people trust and enjoy. At the end of the day, I want potential clients and followers to know that my work is rooted in creativity, care, and a genuine love for telling people’s stories.I’m a photographer and creative business owner based in San Diego. Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience, for me, often shows up in unexpected moments. A few years ago, I was in a car accident during rush hour traffic. Thankfully, I wasn’t seriously injured, but I was sore, shaken, and doing everything I could to ward off whiplash—including soaking in an Epsom salt bath—when one of my top clients called. They had something “big” they wanted photographed within 24 hours.
Still reeling from the accident, I initially said I couldn’t take it on. But then the client called me back directly to share the details: the President of the United States would be visiting their company headquarters, and they wanted me alongside the press corps to capture the event. In that moment, I had a choice—let my circumstances hold me back, or rise to the challenge.
I said yes. Within minutes, I had a rental car booked, and the very next morning I was on the road to photograph the event. That experience reminded me that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about adaptability, commitment, and choosing to keep moving forward even when things aren’t ideal. Sometimes, the biggest opportunities come disguised as the hardest days.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my favorite marketing stories came out of the pandemic. When my usual work came to a halt, I knew families still wanted connection and memories, even if life looked very different, so I joined a movement called the “Front Porch Photo Project.” A few times a week, before picking up my son from preschool, I’d stop by homes of families who signed up through my website. From the sidewalk, I captured portraits of families, couples, and even pet parents—images that documented such a unique moment in time.
What started as a simple way to stay creative turned into something much bigger. It gave people joy and connection during an isolating time, and it introduced me to dozens of new clients—many of whom still book annual sessions with me today. It was a reminder that marketing isn’t just about selling; it’s about showing up and finding creative ways to connect.
