We recently connected with Amy Mastrogiuseppe and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My defining moment came when I was suffering from a bout of cluster migraines in 2016, of all things. I had been personal training and met my mentor, who I had been hearing about for some time, to help me with the migraines. That’s when I was introduced to Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching. After my appointment, I called my husband and told him how amazing it was. I left feeling like I had a brand new body. And I’m not even joking. I knew right then and there, that I wanted to become a stretch therapist to help people feel the same way I felt. To be able to feel pain-free and enjoy life to the fullest.
Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a former graphic designer, turned personal trainer, turned stretch therapist. I’ll be cliche and say I wanted to help people when I changed careers. But that doesn’t explain my passion for happiness and wellness. I grew up in rural West virginia, where opportunities were limited. I saw how limited opportunities can negatively affect people, especially their happiness and health. Some deep down passion was always there. I wanted to break-free of those limitations and obstacles to prove otherwise. And I think that’s how I got to be where I am today. That’s my “why”.
I provide the most unique stretch therapy to my clients. Not many people use the technique I use, Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching. And being a Level V Master therapist, I provide unparalleled service to my clients. Each person has unique circumstances and medical history. I use all that information to provide a comprehensive treatment plan. Not only do you get modified Ashiatsu massage, along with stretching. Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching builds strength as you stretch. It’s not your ordinary stretching experience. It’s actually kind of like a workout. A little soreness is normal. I promise you, you’ve never experienced stretching like this before. And the best part, it’s effective and lasts.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Oh my…that’s a hard one. I’m a big reader! So many good books. Anatomy Trains has been the biggest one to influence how I stretch people. It teaches you about the fascial lines of the body and how everything is connected. Alignment Matters changed the way I think about the body. Talk about thinking outside the box! Anyone interested in the body needs to read this one (or any book my Katy Bowman).
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first started, I thought everyone could just move in certain ways. For example, everyone should be able to squat properly or get into downdog easily. Throughout the years, it has been fascinating to learn the little things to constrict the body here and tighten the body there, making that the opposite of true! Everyone really is so individual! And the most influential part of the body, the mind. The more I learn about the mind/body connection the more I can help my clients. I love learning those types of lessons.
