We were lucky to catch up with Amy Mackey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents set high expectations—there was a consistent message that no matter what I chose to do, be that business, hobby, or passion, I better do it to the best of my ability.
In everything I did, I was expected to give it my all, and that was the definition of success.
I didn’t have to love doing chores, or find joy in a part time job, or make a living doing what someone else defined as a “good job” but I did have to choose to put in every effort possible for the task at hand.
Even though my parents encouraged me to follow my heart and passions, they were very clear that I might have to work many jobs I didn’t enjoy along the way to support my creative endeavors. In their minds, as long as I was exceeding the minimum that was expected of me, I was going to ultimately find happiness because that extra effort would be rewarded.
I have found that this principle, to do my best in everything I do, has made my life much more rewarding.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m always shifting how I describe “what I do”, as I’m always adding new skills to that list!
At the moment, I can say that I help others find ways to follow their passions and deepen their spiritual growth through tools such as meditation, astrology, tarot, yoga, and ceremonial magick. Added to that are practical tasks such as healthy eating and exercise, mindful practices of maintaining a stable home, and clear sets of boundaries and standards that help them to see the growth they are making.
I especially love to be a channel for Source to come through and inspire them to make the changes they know are possible.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The good ol’ fashioned “word of mouth” has been the key to my business. Others have shared their experiences and the way I have helped them grow, and their friends then choose to book with me, and they in turn share with their friends and family.
I am always so happy to hear how new clients have found me through recommendations from others that have worked with me previously.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I’d add in several “minors” from college that would help me now in much more practical ways than my degrees currently do. I’d take business classes, economic classes and other entrepreneurial classes (instead of so many arts classes lol). I have no limit of creativity or of creative skills (drawing, painting, singing, dancing, etc), but I have had to play catch up with business tools like lead magnets, funnels, marketing and other skills that are more practical.
