We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Lewis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Absolutely! Being a freelance makeup artist and esthetician allows me to find great fulfillment in enhancing others’ beauty and confidence. The freedom to create my own schedule and adapt it as needed is truly empowering. However, during quieter moments, I can’t help but wonder about the stability and balance that a regular 9-5 job could offer. It’s a gentle reminder that finding equilibrium in my work flow is something I aspire to achieve. Nonetheless, the joy and fulfillment I experience in my profession make it all worthwhile.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey as a professional makeup artist began in 2012 at the MAC Cosmetics counter, where I discovered my love for the artistry. While studying Marketing & Business Administration at the University of Toledo, I had the opportunity to explore my passion by taking on part-time freelance work. It was during this time that I realized being a makeup artist wasn’t just about glamour and glitter. It required dedication, hard work, and a lot of on-the-job learning. Thankfully, I embraced the challenge and quickly adapted to the fast-paced environment.
Surprisingly, it was through the encouragement of several clients in need of makeup services for their events that I realized the potential of expanding beyond the counter. Armed with a small kit and a lot of determination, I took a leap of faith and started accepting freelance gigs. To my delight, my clients were thrilled with the results and began referring me to others. Before I knew it, my calendar was booked solid, and I decided to establish a formal booking process. That’s when my business officially took off in 2014.
Since then, my journey in the beauty industry has been an incredible adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working on various projects, ranging from bridal and beauty makeup to commercial, editorial, and even special effects. From celebrities and fashion shows to car commercials and TV shoots, each experience has shaped me as an artist and taught me invaluable lessons.
Last year, I took a step further in my career by becoming a licensed advanced esthetician. This allowed me to expand my services and offer facials, brow waxing/tinting/lamination, and lash lift/tints in addition to makeup services at The Skin Studio. It has been a rewarding addition to my repertoire, as I can now focus on optimum skin health and help my clients achieve their skincare goals.
With over 10 years of professional makeup artistry experience, I am known for creating quality makeup looks that speak to my clients’ personal style and photograph beautifully. My signature aesthetic revolves around clean, natural, and radiant looks that enhance their favorite features. I take great pride in leaving my clients feeling poised, confident, and ready to take on the rest of their day. Additionally, my expertise in eyebrow services sets me apart, as my trained eye for beauty from a makeup artistry standpoint ensures stunning results.
One of my proudest achievements is building my business from the ground up and creating a successful career for myself. My business also serves as a beauty agency, handling bookings for several talented makeup artists and hairstylists in Northwest Ohio.
I am truly grateful for the support and opportunities that have come my way. Each experience has fueled my passion and deepened my love for this industry. I look forward to continuing this journey, creating beautiful moments for my clients, and spreading confidence through my artistry. Currently my primary goal is to work with more celebrities and individuals in the entertainment industry, as well as establish connections with fellow makeup artists who primarily work in this field. By expanding my network and engaging with like-minded professionals, I aim to further elevate my craft and broaden my horizons within the beauty industry.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a makeup artist, the most rewarding aspect is my ability to enhance someone’s natural beauty and boost their confidence. Seeing the transformation and the joy it brings to my clients is truly fulfilling. The impact of makeup goes beyond the physical appearance—it has the power to make someone feel empowered, radiant, and ready to conquer the world. Knowing that I played a part in helping someone feel their best and shine from within is incredibly gratifying. Also building connections with clients and being a part of their special moments, whether it’s a wedding, a photoshoot, or a red carpet event, creates lasting memories and a sense of accomplishment. Being able to combine artistry with the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives is what makes being a makeup artist so rewarding to me.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Here are a few common points of misunderstanding makeup artists specifically:
Skill and technique: People may underestimate the level of skill, knowledge, and technique required to create different makeup looks. They may not fully grasp the artistry and precision involved in achieving a flawless makeup application.
Time and preparation: Makeup application can be a time-consuming process, especially for complex looks or large groups of people. Non-creatives may not realize the amount of time and preparation required before a makeup artist even arrives (cleaning brushes, sanitizing their kit, loading/unloading heavy equipment, etc).
Adaptability and versatility: Makeup artists need to be versatile and adaptable to different skin tones, face shapes, and client preferences. Non-creatives may not fully appreciate the range of skills and expertise needed to cater to diverse clients and their unique needs.
Business aspects: Makeup artists often face the challenges of running their own business, including managing bookings, marketing, and client communication. Non-creatives may not be aware of the business side of being a makeup artist and the effort required to maintain a successful career.
Physical demands: Makeup artists often work long hours, standing on their feet for extended periods and carrying heavy kits. Non-creatives may not realize the physical demands and stamina required to provide professional makeup services.
It’s important for non-creatives to have an open mind and gain a deeper understanding of the artistry, skills, and dedication that makeup artists and creatives in general bring to their professions.
