We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Lanci a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
The story of my first client was an interesting one.
I started my first business as a health coach in 2015. At the time, I had finished my health coaching certification at the same time as becoming a mom. Needless to say, I spent very little time on my business as I was navigating the journey of motherhood while also working a full-time job, that was an hour’s commute each way from my home. Then, in 2016 I gave it the good ole college try. I networked, I went to workshops and I even got coaches to guide me along the way. But still, my business persisted as a non-profit and made no money whatsoever.
At the time, I had a business coach and she asked to have a 1-on-1 on Zoom. As you can imagine, I was in tears when I saw her face on my phone while sitting in my car at work. I felt like I was a failure and didn’t know what else to do. After asking me some questions, she realized I had a love for writing. In fact, her exact words were, “Amy, we’ve been working together for 7 months and not ONCE did you mention that you write!”
That was when she challenged me to switch my business over from health coaching to copywriting. I rolled up my sleeves and changed my website and business cards to showcase my new direction. A week later, I enrolled two clients into my new group program and that was how I got my first clients.

Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a communication consultant. I help businesses to find and tell their story so they can connect with their ideal audience. At first, I only offered copywriting services. But as my business grew, and i grew individually, I realized that the #1 service businesses bought from me was writing their About page copy for their website. I found more and more people who did not know how to tell their story, let alone what their story was. And as I explored the possibilities, I realized my journey had been leading up to this point all along.
When I was younger, I was able to pull out people’s stories, whether they were strangers or friends. There were times when I would meet someone in a grocery store or at the airport and all of a sudden they start to divulge things to me that they had never told anyone else.
Over the last 7 years, I have learned that while the story is told in a direct and linear fashion, that’s not how the human mind works. The human mind sees all the stories its ever processed and because of that, its really hard for business owners to see the story that needs to be told.
To help my clients navigate their stories, I offer coaching to explore and piece together their unique storyline as well as done-for-you services to incorporate my clients’ stories into their websites, social media, email campaigns and overall online presence.
I am so proud of the work I do because it’s so personal. The people who work with me usually get more than they realize. Here, they hire me to work on their story when really, I’m helping them to own their story in the process.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Simon Sinek’s TedXTalk and book, “Start With Why” was a gamechanger for me. The WHY is the real crux behind any form of innovation and connection with your audience. Any time I get lost in the details or wonder what to do next in my business, I always go back to the original WHY that got me started down this path in the first place.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, I was working at home on my full-time job and my business with my 5-year-old daughter at home. My husband worked from home too. It was a struggle because we felt isolated and did not have childcare. I was getting more and more burned out.
But one day, I got news that shocked me to my core: My friend, KeeKee Cornelious, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She was one of my dearest friends and to lose her was extremely jarring and upsetting.
Losing her was just the thing that got me to send in my notice at work to finally go into my business full-time.
