Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Kalikow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I handle my own social media. it is a tricky thing for sure. I want it to reflect my company and my voice. much of my content is how I spend my day and what I either see and love or have accomplished for clients. it is great to see my followers responseS to what I post. while I try and be creative, I am surely no expert!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We are a boutique interior design firm based in NYC. We specialize in creating livable, unique spaces for our clients, understanding how they live, what their personal style is and what they are looking for in their dream home. As a mother of 4 daughters, understanding how families live and what is practical is second nature to me. finding unique and interesting ways to execute chic yet functional design is something we specialize in. We work on everything from ground up builds, to full renovations, to solely interior design. Working hand in hand with our clients and ensuring that every detail is thought about is essential. Continuously discovering new resources, design ideas and partnerships is super important to me. Lighting is one of my favorite parts of the design process. I really feel that lighting shapes a room and I search the world for interesting and unique fixtures. I want my work to reflect our unique design aesthetic.
I am very proud of the firm that I have created and the clients that have entrusted their homes to us. Every design is unique and special to the specific clients needs, all centered on the cornerstones of chic, clean, uncluttered livability.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My first project was a close friend who just purchased a beautiful home in NYC. I had no idea what I was doing and this was a big job to complete! The project was mid stream and I needed to see it to completion. I was fortunate to have great subs on the job that answered all my questions and provided guidance. Every step was a learning experience and I never made the same mistake twice. There was so much learning on that first project and there were times that I questioned my ability, but I did not give up. The apartment came out amazing and I continued to work with them on their next home, this time with far more experience and trust in myself.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My career has not been a straight line. I loved being in a creative industry but was always on the business side. From advertising to fashion PR to magazine editorial to custom high-end invitations. Everything I did was creative and business intertwined. Once I had my children, I knew I wanted to continue to do something creative and was fortunate to be given the opportunity to express my creativity and run my own business. Still being able to be with my children when they were younger was important. Balancing work and motherhood was and still is, not always easy. The transition was not without its struggles, but working thru them was part of the journey
