As an award-winning speaker, author, choreographer and coach, Amy Jordan uses her own experience to fuel hope and possibility during this time of global trauma. A professional dancer by trade, Jordan has been living with type 1 diabetes for over 51 years. Complications of the chronic condition cost Amy much of her sight, rendering her legally blind at age 21.
Never defeated, Jordan used her dance background to support other youth living with and effected by diabetes and obesity. Her SWEET ENUFF Movement, diabetes and obesity prevention program for kids, was a dance-based education system nominated for then First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘End Childhood Obesity Challenge.
In 2009, Amy Jordan faced death and amputation. She was hit by a New York City express bus. Her right leg crushed and nearly amputated, Jordan vowed at the time of impact “If I survive the night, there will be a Victory Dance.”
In that moment, crushed under that bus tire, The Victory Movement was born. Twenty-three surgeries and tens of hours of rehabilitation that continues today, Amy did her literally Victory Dance performing with her Victory Dance Project in 2017.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a woman living with a chronic condition the biggest story I absorbed was that I was ‘sick’ and unable to be successful. I had the underdog syndrome. Living with diabetes in the 1980’s-1990’s was scary and isolating. I felt ‘different,’ unattractive and full of shame.
Fortunately, I encountered support to rewrite this narrative. It took some time and effort. One job at atime I faced my fear of not being able to physically keep up with my peers. Not only was this a fallacy, I learned that I excelled in my work environments. It was intensely empowering.
Educating those in my environment is paramount to success. I have become confident in asking for what I need to maintain my health and produce at my highest capacity. This can be anything from asking for better light to accommodate my visual impairment, to asking for specific food to maintain good diabetes management. In the end, it is a teaching moment for others and affords me a safe and fulfilling experience.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My journey of spreading the Victory Movement came out of necessity and a desire to spread hope and possibility during a time fo global trauma.
After the bus accident I had to rebuild my life. There was no playbook so I created one outlined in my book ‘Dance because You Can’ 5 Steps to Transform Trauma to Triumph. It is a step-by-step guide to moving past our circumstances and creating a new reality.
My bigger mission is to use my background in the arts to spread a sense of hope and unity, that we can transform any adversity into victory. This has evolved in many practical ways. It started an continues with The Victory Dance Project professional dance company. My keynote and motivaitnal speaking supports humanity in corporate culture. The film, ‘Amy’s Victory Dance,’ is another means fo sharing a story of resilience and never being defeated. The Victory Gear apparel will also use fashion as a meens to spread hope an loving your scars, internal and external.
We all have a specific mission. I hope to encourage and inspire anyone I encounter that their life has meaning, and they can Create Vicgory in the Moment.
