Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
In the words of Bob Ross, my creative journey has been one of “happy little accidents.” While in recovery from Covid in 2020, I found myself with the opportunity to explore my long time love of art. Although I’ve had no formal training in the arts, I’ve continually challenged myself to dive into learning acrylic painting, amateur photography, mixed media arts, frame making as well as fiber/ yarn art with crocheting at knitting. Most of my learning has come from YouTube, social media and a lot of trial and error. I love using upcycled materials and making old things new and am continually researching new and innovative techniques to further develop my skill. Since I do have a full time career in healthcare, time has been the most challenging obstacle to advancing my art career. However, I am continually challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and connect with other local artists, apply to and participate in art calls and fairs in order to grow and evolve as an artist.

Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was raised for most of my life in KC and graduated from KSU. I eventually returned to school and have since been working in physical therapy at a local skilled nursing facility. I never believed I could be an artist but was prompted by my boyfriend to explore it as I had to be home for a month during Covid. I initially began with acrylic painting but have explored many other art forms as well. I have never limited myself and I continue to try to push myself to be better which I think is something that has helped me grow as an artist. I have found that KC truly has some amazing people in the industry and I’m proud of myself for not giving up. Despite not always getting the “yes” I would like on some art calls, I still continue to learn from every experience and still find art as my therapeutic way to express emotion through creative expression.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Supporting local business is one of the best ways to support local artists. Personally, I only buy gifts for Christmas that give back or support local for that very reason.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Less is sometimes more . This has been hard for me as I tend to be a perfectionist and often have multiple projects going at once . So staying focused and allowing growth through mistakes has lead to great opportunities.
