We were lucky to catch up with Amy Herzberg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve recently had the chance to be a part of “The Polar Express Train Ride” in Whippany, NJ, and I have to say it was much more meaningful than I thought it would be. It is of course, based on The Polar Express book and movie. When I first got the job, I didn’t think too much about it.
But at this point in time I’ve already done 93 shows, and it is truly magical every single time.
I get to meet children who truly still believe in Santa and be a part of their magical journey. That’s truly a privilege.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an actress, singer, dancer, choreographer and vocal teacher based in New York City.
After two years in the city I’ve already been a part of 3 off-Broadway shows, as well as countless regional shows, music videos, commercials and short films.
I started my career holding my parents hostage in the living room, making sure they watched every single move and note me and my cousin did for our weekend shows.
Eventually, their living room simply became too small.
I started taking ballet lessons since I was 4, acting at 6 and singing at 8.
It truly was, and still is, my favorite thing to do in the world.
Today I also teach vocal lessons in New York City.
I love to work with students of all ages and levels, and help them find their own voice using safe and healthy techniques for singing.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
When I first moved to the city, I had no idea how to find auditions and how to approach auditions. It might be very clear to people who have been in the city for a while, or have gone to college here – but I was lost.
So – for whoever is reading this, here’s what I’ve learned!
For auditions you can use websites like: playbill, casting networks, actors access and backstage. They all offer slightly different type of works, but you’ll get the hang of it once you start looking.
Also – you need an audition book to audition for musical theater.
It’s basically a binder of about 10 songs that showcase you the best possible way.
If you need someone to help you with that – there’s no better place than actor therapy. I’ve learned so much from everyone there and truly had the best time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a teacher, my goal is to make sure my students put their health first. When singing, there are ways to push yourself a little too far sometimes to get a result you want in ways that are harmful to you, I always remind my students, and myself, that harming ourselves to get something for a moment is not what we want.
We want to work hard and get stronger so we can sing 8 shows a week, not just one.
