We recently connected with Amy Henry and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
In 2022, my life took a significant turn. Despite seemingly having it all – the big house, stable career in corporate America, and a long-term marriage with great kids – I was haunted by a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction, that something was always missing. It dawned on me that I was living someone else’s life, shaped by external expectations and societal norms, and ignoring the inner child within, screaming to be heard. As a child, I dreamed of being a performer and living a big, bold life. Yet, I had silenced that voice in order to conform and play safe. Once I realized this, through courage, I was able to break free from this preconceived mold. I ended a 23-year marriage, restructured my relationship with my children, changed careers, bid farewell to my fitness teaching career, moved to a new home, and, for the first time, embraced solo living when my children weren’t around—a seismic shift that rattled my very core.
Change is unsettling because our minds and nervous systems naturally seek stability, resisting the unfamiliar, preferring the comfort of routine and familiarity. But I recognized that embracing change, however uncomfortable, was pivotal for personal growth and spiritual enlightenment. Rather than remaining stagnant in fear of the unknown, I chose to redefine my life’s narrative. This journey, though challenging, opened doors to experiences, people, and knowledge that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. It propelled me to explore meditation, prioritize yoga, and embrace journaling as tools for healing and envisioning my future, rather than go on anti-depressants or turn towards alcohol.
Having had a nutrition coaching career on and off for the last 17 years, my passion for health and wellness deepened during this transformative period as I discovered that achieving genuine well-being transcends mere diet and exercise. It involves nurturing harmony between the mind, body, and soul—a synergy often overlooked in the pursuit of wellness. Realizing this, I embarked on writing a book, aiming to guide individuals, especially women, towards crafting their unique Wellness Method and showing them the strategies to do so. I believe that understanding oneself, motivations, and priorities is the cornerstone for personal growth and actualization, rejecting the idea of one-size-fits-all solutions in favor of tailored approaches that resonate on a deeper level with who you are in spirit. By turning within, quieting your mind and truly charting the present and future path you want to take, you can lead a life you have dreamed of because you have the power to do so.
Currently in the editing phase, my book, potentially titled, The Method Defined, has become a vessel to share insights and inspire others to forge their paths to physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Through this journey, I’ve amassed 210 pages in just four months, motivated by the urge to empower individuals to curate their unique paths to self-realization and fulfillment. My goal is to also follow this book with 2 other inspirational guides as well as use my voice in the podcasting world to inspire empowerment and purpose within others.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I created my nutrition company, Amy Henry Nutrition LLC, in 2007 and began counseling individuals on how to eat healthy and exercise. I also began my corporate wellness speaking as I love to be on stage talking about food, exercise, and sleep, so for me, it wasn’t a job, it was a passion! As of today, I have counseled over 500 individuals and spoken in front of groups anywhere from 10 people up to 400 people in order to inspire and guide.
When you do not feel good internally and/or externally, all areas of your person are impacted. Not only that, but everyone around you is also impacted by your mood, outlook, and behaviors. Recognizing how you think, feel and behavior each day is key to growing and evolving. By age 35 we tend to be on autopilot, and if we are not aware, we will just repeat the same thoughts, emotions and behaviors that might not get us what we want in life.
Creating a path of wellness, which includes nutrition, exercise, sleep, yoga and meditation will help you achieve a higher level of intentional well-being for which to thrive in all areas of your life.
My books, podcasts and social media platforms will help guide my followers towards awareness and inspiration, helping them reach their wellness goals!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I found my purpose by meditating and praying. I know my strengths and talents God gave me. I have clarity as to what God wants me to do. He wants me to inspire others to have the courage to change their lives through creating the wellness synergy of mind, body and soul. My first book is a testament to the power of living intentionally and with purpose.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My whole adult life I told myself I was a horrible writer. Do you know why? Well, in 8th grade, my English teacher told me I was a bad writer. I don’t remember his exact words, but I do recall taking his opinion and storing it away for which to label myself “a horrible writer.” I would always say that to others – “I can’t write that letter, I am a horrible writer!” We all have opinions, judgment, stories and labels we collect from other people throughout our lives – however, it doesn’t mean they are true. We create roadblocks and limitations on what we can accomplish, who we are, what we truly want because we allow the external world to define us. Guess what? The external world has no idea who you are. Understanding that you are the only one who truly knows who you are, gives you the power to start shedding those thoughts and beliefs that have been hindering you from living out the life you want to live.
I had an epiphany in July, when my business coach said these words – “You have such an interesting story and I think you could inspire so many people by writing a book, because you really write well!” That statement, from someone who had been working with me for a month, reading my business plans and ideas, made me realize I had been putting limitations on myself for years. That is what gave me the courage to begin writing my book!
