We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Hamack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I don’t have to wonder what it would be like to have a “regular job” since I spent over a decade working in corporate America before deciding to pursue a full-time career as an artist. Honestly, I’m infinitely happier now.
While I appreciated the security and benefits of a 9-5 job, I eventually dreaded waking up each day. I realized I didn’t want to spend my life in a job that didn’t fulfill or motivate me. Life is too short to spend it doing something that doesn’t bring joy.
These days, I wake up excited to do what I love. I enjoy being my own boss, setting my own schedule, and the convenience of working from home.
Of course, running your own business comes with its challenges. Some days are tough, filled with uncertainty about whether people will appreciate my work or if I’ll be successful. It’s hard work, and I do feel stress and fatigue, but I experienced those feelings in my previous job as well. Now, at least, I can tell myself, “I’m really lucky to do this every day!”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin, where I first learned the value of hard work from a young age. Living in the country surrounded by nature instilled in me a deep appreciation for the world around me. We had a large garden with vegetables and flowers, which I believe is where my love of nature-based jewelry originated.
After college, I worked in various corporate roles, but during the pandemic, I realized that the industry no longer fulfilled me. Seeking a new direction, I took the leap almost two years ago and founded Amy’s Heartfelt Art, Inc.
I’ve had a lifelong passion for accessories since childhood. There’s something magical about how the right piece can elevate an outfit. Over the years, my style has evolved, but my love for variety has remained constant.
In my resin jewelry collections, you’ll find a delightful mix of bright, bold colors alongside sleek, sophisticated tones, offering something for every taste and personality. I believe in the beauty of diversity, and my goal is to create handmade jewelry that speaks to everyone’s unique style.
The name “Amy’s Heartfelt Art” reflects my core values and the authenticity I bring to every piece. Each earring, necklace, and design I craft is a heartfelt expression of love. Knowing that my art brings happiness to others fuels my creative spirit every day.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe the best way to support artists and a vibrant creative community is to buy directly from local artists instead of large corporations. Not only does this provide financial support, but it also allows you to explore and connect with your local area. You can find artists in a variety of ways: visit local galleries, attend art fairs, pop-up events, and even stop by coffee shops and restaurants that showcase local artwork.
If you have a favorite local or out-of-town shop where you’d like to see our art featured, please let us know. We value every opportunity to meet other artists and business owners.
If you see us at a show, please stop by to chat about our work and share your thoughts. Meeting new people and seeing your excitement when you discover a piece of art you love is always a highlight.
You can also help spread the word on social media and among your friends and family. Sharing an artist’s work online is a simple, free way to promote them. By tagging the artist, you give them credit and help their work reach a wider audience. This support can make a significant impact, especially when an artist is just starting out!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a creative professional, one of the most rewarding aspects of my work is being able to choose what I put out into the world. I enjoy experimenting with different styles and mediums to create beautiful pieces for others to enjoy.
My favorite part, though, is seeing the joy on someone’s face when they fall in love with a piece, whether it’s for themselves or a loved one. It’s truly an honor to have my art chosen, especially given the abundance of talented artists out there.
This is my second season participating in art shows, and it’s gratifying to see returning customers who stop by to say hello and check out my new work. I also appreciate the artist community; I’ve met many talented individuals who have become great friends. Being part of this community is something I wouldn’t trade for anything!
