We recently connected with Amy Gallagher and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I went out on a limb and bought myself equipment to make tumblers, thinking it would be a fun little hobby to make customized tumblers for friends and family. One day, I made a tumbler with my friend’s bar’s logo on it (the Cork-N-Bottle), and he loved it. He ordered 35 tumblers with his logo to sell at his bar. When I was delivering the tumblers to him, a lady saw the customized tumblers and asked where he got them. She is the head of marketing for a large construction company in the area and wanted to order 25 tumblers with their logo for advertising purposes. I was blown away that such a big company wanted to order tumblers from me. I couldn’t believe it! What started as a hobby quickly turned into a flourishing business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Shortly after becoming an empty nester, I started making custom tumblers for friends and family. Within two months, my new hobby became my very own small business. Not only were people asking for tumblers to give away as gifts, but companies of all sizes started ordering my custom tumblers for advertising, corporate gifting, and giveaways. I made a friend a “football mom” tumbler with her son’s last name and number in a football jersey. She brought it to a tailgate party, and the orders started pouring in within days. As of today, I have created tumblers for 11 area sports teams and dance schools. I love to help my customers come up with ideas to make their tumbler designs as unique and personalized as they want. Everyone likes receiving a gift with their name on it. When a company orders tumblers for their employees, I always tell them that I can make every tumbler personalized for each employee by adding their names. My tumblers stand out because the designs are sublimated into the tumbler. Sublimation printing is a process where heat and pressure are used to transfer ink onto the coating of the tumbler. This creates a permanent image that won’t peel or fade over time, and the tumblers will keep drinks hot or cold for hours.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
In the first few days of starting my business, I contacted my son’s first wrestling coach. He started a business around 15 years ago, developing and selling a bar of soap that would help prevent his wrestlers from getting ringworm. Fast forward to today, and he now has 25 products in several countries. He told me that when he was starting out, he read a book called Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, which changed his life and the way he thought about money. I read the book and have since recommended it to several people. It was very motivating and encouraged me to think differently on how to create passive income streams, and develop a strong money mindset.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My family always says I am a master at networking. The truth is, I just love people. I love meeting new people, talking to people, learning about them, sharing about myself, and becoming friends. As the old quote says, “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t met yet.” Fortunately, my God-given talent of making friends often opens doors to new opportunities.
