We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Fornear. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
When I first got licensed as a massage therapist, I got bored quick. I wanted to help people heal from pain, not put lotion on them (that is how I saw it at the time).
After almost quitting, I was introduced to a licensed massage therapist who helped a friend with massage who experienced a brain trauma injury. She gained back her hearing and smelling. WHAT? At first I thought she was doing weird magic stuff because of all the other clients stories of healing. It was amazing! People were walking away with no more acid reflux, diminished headaches, no more fatigue, loss of bad cravings, completely diminished post surgery scar tissue or joint pain. I never knew moving a muscle a specific way would help those things.
One day, I sat in on one of her classes on the edge of my seat wondering how this all works.
I found out her secret: blood flow. She learned from two midwives, an Olympic trainer and studying the body for 25 years that “life is in the blood.” Therefore, healing is in the blood.
Ever since then, I seek to understand everyone’s healthiest version of themselves by allowing them an opportunity for healing through bodywork and other techniques at my clinic, Posture Restorations.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my journey seeking pain relief in grade school when I saw my mom suffer from chronic headaches. A glass of water and a head massage was the only thing that I saw gave her relief.
Soon after in high school, my dad was diagnosed with 4th stage melanoma skin cancer. Doctor said, “He had days to live.” My grandpa, his dad, died and a friend’s mom died the same year. My dad is now cancer-free for 20 years. God had a different plan for him. I was super thankful, however, this is when I started questioning life, health, illness and death.
Why do some healthy people get sick and why do some sick people live?
In college I started researching different books, including counseling and human anatomy. One book that inspired me the most was the Bible. It had two concepts that impacted me. First, God does not want anyone “to perish, but have everlasting life” and second, He wants us to “walk in the good works set before us.” The best way I felt like I could serve people providing massage to be the healthiest version of themselves so they could walk in their calling with less body stresses.
Three years into massaging, I realized I don’t like working alone. Within a month of me questioning if I should continue massage as a career, a dog attacked me on a casual walk in neighborhood. The dog bit off a large portion of my right arm so I had emergency surgery and a 6th month recovery. During this time I investigated my existence. I tried to understand my purpose by learning about my skills, talents, strengths and gifts. Through this discovery and my own healing, I realized my purpose: I love encouraging people’s purpose. With this in mind, I grew a team, moved to a bigger space, developed processes and now have more techniques and tools to help people.
I hope to offer people not only a service, but also an experience to encourage the body to function the way it was designed for. The hope is to posture people for success. This is why I named the business “Posture Restorations.” We have multiple restoring techniques such as pain relief bodywork, relaxation massage, ozone therapy, infrared light therapy and more. Our treatment plans have helped decrease fatigue, relieve aches, lower dependency, increase blood flow, and decrease or completely diminish scar tissue to promote healing,
If you feel stuck with stress or pain that prevents you to move forward in life, come see us. The 1st-Time-Appointment is 90 minutes where we discuss how to resolve the issue, do posture assessments, and bodywork.
I am mostly proud when I see a client walk away smiling more and coming back to the next appointment with a story of something they could do when they couldn’t before therapy. I’ve seen people have less sick days, more time with their family being active, more functional at work and doing things they love to do with their loved ones.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Getting attacked by a dog sending me to the ER for surgery, pivoted my perspective of business. Somehow I got bills paid for by clients and friends and family over 6 months of not working. That was the moment, I knew God had me and this was His business not mine. Through that experience I knew I wasn’t alone in this idea of wanting to help people feel better.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn who to get approval from to start growing my business.
Right before I started growing, I had two successful business owners tell me I shouldn’t grow my business. They said business is hard and you should just stay self-employed with no employees. One of them said, “I hate to say this but you’re not an entrepreneur.”
I remember thinking, if I really believe I should grow this thing, I can’t strive to get people’s approval no matter how successful looking they are. This freed me up to run the business in my own strengths and get help with my weaknesses.
It’s been fun. It’s been hard, but it’s been mostly fun!
