Amy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
For me, it really was shooting weddings and focusing on creative/artistic photos on my own, hoping that my vision was good enough to translate through my work and represent such an important day in people’s life. The pressure, the no do-overs, the challenges that arise sometimes with no time to spare, the sudden complete and total change of plans. Keeping people calm, remaining confident and getting the job done. Wedding photography is certainly not for everyone.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always loved photography as a hobby and not ONCE did I ever think of doing it professionally and I certainly had zero plans to do so. Looking back, I always taken all the photos in my friend group using my trusty my point-and-shoot Canon with built in flash. I didn’t even recognize that fact until MANY years later that I’ve always been the photographer, on an amateur level. I honestly just thought it was because I personally did not want to be in photos myself but the irony in that is, that I actually am very comfortable being photographed, I just rarely take the time to do so.
I got started with photography after people started asking me how much I charged for family photos after I would post my iPhone photos I took of my own daughter. It started happening so often that I borrowed a friends DSLR, learned how to use it, took some photos of my own family and within a month, I won an amateur photography contest.
In a nutshell, who I am is a photographer… what I specialize in, is people. What sets me apart is that I don’t just want to book 1,000 sessions and shoot the same session, location, style for everyone. I’m not into the factory style, churn and burn sessions. I want to talk to you, find out who you are, explore your style and help you create a session, vibe, wedding day that is photographed by me, that translates to you perfectly and portrays who you are in the most beautiful, exciting and coolest way possible. I’m detail oriented, I’m a master at timing things out well and executing them efficiently and you know what, I’m a hell of a lot of fun while I’m doing it.
I can magically break people out of their shell, melt away their fear of being photographed & banish those uncomfortable awkward ways so they can be their real, REAL self and just enjoy the process. No stiff posing, no photos that don’t look like you, I just want you to be at your best and have fun.
I’m constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new creative ideas. I get too bored repeating the same thing over and over so I’m always pushing myself to level up and I feel like that keeps me growing & fresh as a photographer.
I fall into a unique area of photographers that shoot & edit in two opposing styles. The first being light, airy & classic which is how I learned photography. Then the second, which is moody, vibey and dramatic which is a style I’ve never been able to get enough of. Being able to bring both of those to the table for my clients and providing a totally unique experience for them lights me up inside. My creativity blossoms and my mind runs wild, it’s my favorite part of the planning process.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Getting myself out of the mindset that being successful meant that I had to accept everything that came my way and grind, hustle myself until I’m massively burnt out and overworked. Thinking that I can do it all myself and that I don’t need help was the biggest failure of all. None of that is true and I’m so glad I’m finally expanding to the point where I’m bringing others onto my team to help me and ensure that I grow. That really set me on a path of misery for years. I’m very fortunate to have people in my life who have helped me see that it’s okay to have help which will actually allow me to do more of what I want and spend more quality time creating the most incredible plan for my clients.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Honestly, I just want to do cool shoots and get creative. It’s so simple for me, I see places, come up with concepts I want to try, they don’t always work but honestly, it’s such an important muscle for me to flex & grow. I truly feel like I really do reach some new heights when I go for it.
A huge part of it is also giving my clients an insanely good experience, one where they are so grateful afterward and feel proud or confident of themselves. That’s magic to me.
