We recently connected with Amy Deblase and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Before actually entering the field- in all my adolescent wisdom- I swore I wanted to work in a psychiatric inpatient unit. I also swore I never wanted to work in a private practice setting. I was elated when I was selected for my top choice internship placement site- you guessed it, in a psychiatric inpatient unit in a NYC hospital. I felt so unsuccessful, nearly useless, when I was never able to implement all the “cool” things I was learning in grad school. I shared my woes with my supervisor, who imparted words I will never forget… “it’s all in the relationship; without that, the “cool” things don’t matter.” Those words have stayed with me for over a decade and still ring true as I enter my seventh year working full time in a private practice. Morals of the story- healing happens in relationships so never downplay your ability to connect deeply to another human being; we never really know what we want until we try, whether we swear we will love it or hate it.

Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Amy DeBlase. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in NY, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in NJ and Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMH-C) through a fantastic organization, Postpartum Support International (PSI). I work at a private group practice, Let’s Talk Psychological Wellness, located in NYC but I do all of my work virtually. I am a psychotherapist, working with individual clients, a supervisor and the clinical director.
I am passionate about perinatal mental health, women’s issues, OCD, relationship anxiety, and codependency. I can talk endlessly about self-advocacy, empowerment, communication skills and boundary setting.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would choose the same professional and specialty areas, 10 out of 10 times! I would work through the same challenges, personally & professionally, because they have all played a role in where I have landed. Here & now. I love the work I do. I am honored to be allowed to look into my clients lives, discussing their deepest secrets and fears, along for the ride of their growth and healing.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I bring similar qualities into my work with clients, as I do when supervising, collaborating, leading, and generally working with others. Transparency, reasonably quick responses, and a dash of compassion go a long way in building and sustaining quality relationships.
