We recently connected with Amy Burnett and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I loved to watch sports growing up! In South Dakota, we did not have an NBA team. I remember always watching the “Showtime” Lakers play and I was a huge fan! My favorite player was Earvin “Magic” Johnson. When it was time to name my future basketball organization, Magic Basketball was it!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Basketball has been a big part of my life since I was a kid. I remember playing with the neighbors growing up. As I got older, I spent countless hours outside working on my game. I loved being part of a team in high school. We were very successful, but what I remember and cherish the most are the memories made and life lessons learned along the way.
I started Magic Basketball over 20 Years ago as Austin Lady Magic. My team and I wanted to give girls in the greater Austin area the opportunity to play competitive basketball outside of the school season and give them exposure to college coaches.
Eventually my nephew started loving basketball and asked when he could play for the Lady Magics. This is when we decided to add boys teams!
Our basketball club is focused on helping kids improve both on and off court. We seek quality professional coaches who act with integrity and we don’t make empty promises or recruit kids to our teams. We want to help kids improve and prepare them for success in life both on and off the court.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This is a personal story but in July of 2022 I had a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. The stroke team at Seton Austin is amazing and were prepared for anything. I got the clot busting drug and spent 3 days in the hospital. I am very lucky I was in good shape and focused on my health my entire life and this no doubt helped my recovery.
They eventually discovered I had a hole in my heart. I could not workout for over a year and felt a huge shift in not only my physical health but my mental health as well.
After being cleared to workout again I felt like I was starting over. I remember how much I could lift before or how I could handle many tasks with no problem. I had days where I wanted to focus on the negative or just say why even try to get back in shape or why even try to complete the workload I could before.
I am grateful for all the experiences in sports that taught me to never give up.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best strategy we have is word of mouth. We believe that we have the best club and that our teams will speak for themselves! We are not promoting our win/loss record rather we believe our mission is bigger than basketball
