We were lucky to catch up with Amy Bauman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I talk about this all the time, whether I’m presenting to organizations, in my Facebook community, or coaching my women entrepreneur clients! I actually created a framework called my “Five Goalgetter Golden Keys,” but I’ll share my top two: Mindset and Action.
You can make the best strategy and have all the best plans, but if your mindset isn’t strong you’ll fail. You have to BELIEVE in yourself and in what you’re doing. If you’re thinking, “I’ll try this, but it probably won’t work,” then it’s not going to work. Or if your mindset keeps you stuck in a place where you won’t even take action (imposter syndrome, analysis paralysis, perfectionism, overwhelm, etc.) then your dreams will NEVER come to fruition.
You have to take action. I believe in taking inspired, focused action AND that done is better than perfect. You have to jump in and try. When you take action and don’t see the results you want, learn from it and try again.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2019, I started my business, Your Development Resource. At the time, I was working on my master’s in Business Psychology and was inspired to coach others to grow their personal and professional development. My undergraduate degree is in Education, and I had been a school teacher for a few years, but decided it wasn’t for me. As I was looking for a new career, I kept saying, “I want to be a resource for others!” And so, when I started my business, I named it Your Development Resource.
I do work with organizations and present on personal and professional development topics, but I mostly work with women entrepreneurs who are starting or growing their businesses. I created a professional development group for women in business called Learn. Connect. Support., I have an online small group coaching program called The Success Pod, and I offer one-on-one coaching. My clients seek me out because they know their subject matter but need help to make it a business. For example, I’ve worked with medical professionals who’ve decided to start their own private practice. These women are skilled, experienced doctors, but they need help on business systems, social media/marketing, etc.
The aspect that I am most proud of in my work is the emotional support that I provide my clients as they create and grow their businesses. The praise I hear the most from my clients is that they were stuck, feeling lost and alone, feeling overwhelmed, and losing faith in themselves until they started working with me. I don’t just provide business knowledge, I also provide the mindset coaching and the support that women need as they go on their entrepreneurial journeys.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I didn’t know it at the time, but I was building my entrepreneur mindset long before I ever thought of Your Development Resource. It started when I was a stay at home mom! Reality tv was just becoming mainstream, and during my children’s naptime, I started watching shows that featured women like Bethenny Frankel and her SkinnyGirl brand. I still credit her book, A Place of Yes, for influencing my belief that I can be a great mother and thrive in a business where I’m living my purpose to help others also be successful.
I also love all of the books by Jen Sincero. I remember reading You Are a Badass on a flight, and I was so inspired I could barely contain myself until I landed. I was ready to implement all of my ideas immediately! Her books really go along with my belief that to be successful you have to build a strong, positive mindset and be willing to take inspired action.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I have a strong “know, like, and trust” factor. I’m very authentic. What you see of me on social media and in-person events is truly the person I am. Clients, potential clients, and peers all know that I am in business because coaching, teaching, and helping others succeed is my purpose…and I’ve happened to turn it into a paying business. They also know that money is not my primary driving force. I think a lot of people, especially those just starting their entrepreneurial journeys, think they can’t afford coaching because some coaches are charging CRAZY amounts of money and making huge promises that they can’t deliver on. If I don’t think a potential client will benefit from working with me, I’ll refer her on to someone I think is a good fit for her.
