We were lucky to catch up with AMXXR recently and have shared our conversation below.
AMXXR, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mother did everything right with what she had and what she knew in my eyes. The greatest lesson she taught was the art of being a critical thinker and not being afraid to be an individual even when your views may not be that of the majority. This gave me one of my pillars of creativity in which being yourself is key and being comfortable in your own truth and vulnerability is power. So I can’t measure the impact with words as these teachings are immeasurable to me and my life. I remember her allowing one day a week to speak freely as I wanted and when I had the time I just cursed and used profanity. She stared at me giggling shaking her head as I ranted. When I finished, she said ALL the words in the dictionary to express yourself and you chose profanity as your vehicle. It’s so many more words you can use to encapsulate your emotions and she suggested I read more and use the dictionary as it would benefit me in life and the journey of expression.
AMXXR, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My introduction to the music business wasn’t conventional as I was put on a Erykah Badu remix that was never officially released because the producer liked the texture of my voice. From there my cousin played that song in the barbershop where C.L. Smooth heard it and he later introduced me to Pete Rock at a show in Irving Plaza, NYC backstage. I am most proud of in hindsight my self-discipline to see a task thru and endure my problems until I find a resolution. This has aided me in all of my endeavors as it’s a must when we create in such and uncertain ecosystem of entertainment because nothing is promised. So my supporters know my mantra is…”We on course and in purpose.” along with the phrase “Peace Beloved”.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely. My goal is simply to make timeless music that is a soundtrack to anyone’s life, the good, the bad, the ugly, the triumphs and all the gaps between that we as humans overlook. Healing through the music is my intention but however someone receives is not something that I try to own anymore. Music meets you wherever your spirit is at in that moment. That’s why certain songs sound different when you play them when you in certain mood etc. soundscapes intensify our moods. So my drive is to be the better than I was the day before and leave my people and the world in a better place when I walk away.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
My views on NFTs are they are not solving a problem that is critical in technology and it is a highly co-dependent technology that is overhyped and misunderstood by many. Be that is it may, it is a smart-contract primarily and the value of it is based on one’s belief in the digital item itself. So in regards to it’s connection to Web-3 and creatives, it may seem like a new wave but in all honesty the creative community may be half a decade or better behind in the race of cryptocurrency and its power. This was mostly powered in popularity during the pandemic, which drew a lot of people on alternative methods to make money and invest. My stance is thought it is exciting to many and people have made substantial amounts of money from it in the technology community it is not groundbreaking technology as the focus now is more in realm of AI, Machine Learning and quantum computing.
