We recently connected with Amun Uddin and have shared our conversation below.
Amun, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I absolutely love being a content creator because not only do I get to do what I love, but I also get to share it with the world. I have had moments before where I think about how my life could be different and even more ‘secure’ as some would say. After graduating, I could have gotten a typical 9-5 corporate office job, but honestly at the same time, the sound of that was never that exciting to me. Repeating the same exact schedule for the rest of my life, wasn’t something I wanted for my future. So yeah, social media might not be the stereotypical career choice for many, but it’s perfect for me. I’m able to have fun and have unique and different experiences everyday. It doesn’t feel like i’m in a loop, and that I have the same routine everyday, nothing new and exciting. Instead, I’m able to build relations outside of an office setting and connect with people who are passionate about the same things as me. I also have more creative freedom with what I do, and am not restricted with what I can and can’t do. And the best part of it all, I have a life outside of work. I have always loved traveling, and while being a creator, I’m able to travel the world whenever I want, for as long as I want, and discover new places and cultures. So to me, my life as a creator is a dream come true.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a south-asian beauty content creator who shares her love for all things beauty in her platforms. I started creating content during the Covid pandemic and have had experience in the beauty industry for around 7 years. My beauty career started as a seasonal employee at Ulta Beauty and over the years I have grown within the company. As for social media, I have worked with several brands such as Touchland, Sacheu, and Coach. In 2024, I was selected to be an Ulta Beauty Ambassador and represent the brand around the world. This experience helped me gain even more connections with other brands and creators around the country who share the same interests as me.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ve had moments when people recognize me because they’ve seen me on a brands website or have seen my content and it’s truly the best feeling ever. Just having people come up to me like “You’re Amun!” or “I’ve seen your content” makes it feel like all my hard work has paid off. I recently went to the first ever Ulta Beauty World and took my mom, and she was able to experience this as well and it made me so happy that she could see my success. I also love how in a way, I can be a role model for younger south-asian girls. As a south-asian and hijabi, when I was younger, I felt like there weren’t enough girls who looked like me in the beauty industry and now there are so many of us and I absolutely love it! I love that younger girls who are like me can see that there’s girls in this industry who are just like them, so they feel even more confident.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
A lot of people think that being a social media creator is super easy and that creating and posting content doesn’t take time, but that’s not true. Creating content can be very time consuming because there are so many steps to it. The first step is researching trends and then figuring out ways to add them into your niche and content so that people are interested and that your content is visible to your target audience’s feed. Next is planning out exactly what it is you want to film or photograph, and write a script when necessary. Then if you’re filming for a brand, sometimes you have to send them an idea of what you are planning to create, so that if there’s any edits they want done, you can do those. The quickest part of it all has to be the actual filming. Then comes editing everything and adding any effects, captions, graphics, etc. Then finally based on your target audience’s peak timing for interactions, you can either live post, or schedule a post ahead of time. On top of that, sometimes creators can get a creative block, where we can’t think of anything to post or just don’t have the energy to do it. That’s when some creators plan ahead and batch create content, so that their audience can’t tell and they still see content as usual.
