We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amorette LaFranchi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amorette, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
As far as I can remember, I was exposed to holistic medicine through my mother and father who were both from Mexico. Every Christmas break and summer my parents would take us to Mexico to stay with our grandparents for a week or two, and during that time, if any of us would come down with a cold or a fever, my mother and grandmother would gather some dried herbs from my grandma’s garden and boil it with water and we would then drink the tea. The fever would break as well as the cold symptoms, so sure enough the next day we would be playing again. I vividly remember this being called medicine. My mother and grandmother taught us about herbs and gardening and they cultivated in me a curiosity of plant medicine and all things natural.
For as long as I could remember, I wanted to be a doctor. I think this desire was innate and of course I was also influenced by the way I grew up. At 27 yrs old, I made the decision to embark on a journey through Acupuncture and Chinese medicine school and I am so glad that I did. I attended Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder, Colorado from 2008-2010. I graduated in December 2010. On January 11, 2011, I started my practice because I was so excited to get started on treating patients in my own clinic.
In the beginning, I would treat all conditions and slowly but surely, my practice started seeing more and more patients coming in for fertility, women’s gynecological health, hormone balancing and digestive issues. I started to market my business towards women’s health and fertility. Although I tend to treat men for pain and digestion issues the bulk of my practice is involved in helping women balance their hormones for optimal fertility, and treating women’s health in general. I believe the patients that I treat come to see me because they feel comfortable and safe in knowing that I am an expert in my field and I hold a very quiet and grounding energy as well a professional stance.
I currently work 3-4 days in my clinic and I usually treat about 20-30 patients per week. I keep it manageable at this time because I am a busy mama! I have two small children and a wonderful husband. So I really try to keep a good balance between my work and my home life. When my children are older, I would like to increase the amount of patients that I see each week to 40-50 patients and eventually hire another Licensed Acupuncturist to help me in my clinic. These are goals and one main goal that I have is to obtain my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, which I am currently working on!

Amorette, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I come from a family of Curanderas (traditional Mexican woman healers). Since I was a little girl I remember helping my mother in the garden, cooking in the kitchen and preparing Yerba Buena herbs for a healing tea to help with my tummy ache. My beautiful mother passed away in 2008 and to this day I can hear her voice guiding me throughout my own motherhood and my medicine making. Everything she and my grandmother Leogarda has taught me is still alive and well in my life and especially in my career as a practitioner of Holistic Chinese Medicine. Yoga, hiking and biking are three of my favorite movements that I partake on a weekly basis. I have an amazing husband/partner named Rich and two wonderfully adorable and happy little children named Chloé and Rémi! I am the proud owner of AcuBliss Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine right here in beautiful Boulder, Colorado! I created my business for you because you deserve to know how your body works and how to heal it yourself! My practice is a place where you can get practical advice on health and wellness from me. I specialize in treating women’s hormones and gynecological health as well as fertility for assisting in the preparation for pregnancy, post partum health and of course digestive disorders and emotional well-being. Every time I get a text message or an email or even a comment at a follow up appointment from my patients singing praises on how acupuncture has helped them feel so much better, or how their period came on day 28 of their cycle which hasn’t happened since they were 18 yrs old, or when they bring in their positive pregnancy test to show me the good news, I well up in gratitude and happiness inside because this is why I do what I do. So if I could go back, I would still 100% choose Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine as my profession! Thank you!

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most helpful aspect to succeediong in my field is being able to communicate well with your patients. Also creating a space where they feel empowered to take on their healing journey. The patient is the one that heals themselves, we just facilitate and guide.
