We were lucky to catch up with Amisha Nair recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Growing up in an Indian family, there’s this idea that your parents might set you on a career path of THEIR choice. I was fortunate enough to not only grow up with parents who refuted that idea, but were artists in their own way. My dad is currently the lead singer of a heavy metal band in Dubai and my mom used to be an incredible dancer. They always fueled my passion for the visual arts, going as far as to connect me to people within the field of film and digital media. It was honestly their consistent support that got me to where I am right now. They financed all my artistic expenses when I was first starting in this field, constantly inquired about any new projects or ideas I was working on, and continued to be the biggest support system I could’ve asked for in a field that’s ever-changing and extremely creatively driven.

Amisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I spent most of my life in a school in Dubai that didn’t always support the creative arts and was extremely STEM based. At the time, my main focus was pursuing a career in film so my mom moved the both of us here so I could eventually go to college for the art. I had always been into photography by default, so when a friend had reached out to me to do her senior pictures, I was happy to accept. After a lot of high school experience, I realized I wanted to do more.
I had model friends who wanted to build their portfolio and in turn I got to build mine. I delved into portrait, editorial, creative, studio, and fashion photography, and that’s what I do now. I love hearing the visions clients have for their shoots and working closely with them to bring it to life. Versatility is a huge deal in this field and I love being able to dive into different kinds of shoots all the time. Being both a filmmaker and photographer has its perks, you look at things from a visual storytelling perspective and when you’ve spent so much time directing films, directing photoshoots becomes even more fun.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve wanted to be in the creative industry for as long as I can remember. And even now, when I look back at some of the work I did even just a couple of years ago, I can see growth, and the goal is to just steadily go upwards. It’s an absolute dream of mine to work with designers, fashion shows, high-end brands/magazines etc. I’m slowly but surely building towards that dream of living in New York and pursuing this full time. Every time I feel like that dream is out of reach, I think about where I am now and how my current work felt out of reach just a few years ago. Perspective is what keeps me going towards mastering this craft because there will always be something bigger and better to look forward to.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The product and the feedback. The two go hand in hand with both film and photography. Whenever I’m directing on a set, you see how something plays out in person, but it isn’t until you get to editing that you realize just how amazing it was. There have been multiple moments wherein my DP/editor and I have had to take a moment and rewatch a scene over and over again just because we can’t believe how well it turned out.
Similarly, with photography, I’ve been to excited to keep going and will need a minute to take in how well a shot came out. And the feedback from the client when they see what a crucial role they played in it turning out the way it did, is so satisfying and motivating.
