We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amirah Perkins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amirah below.
Alright, Amirah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Well, we all know sometimes you’ll hear a thousand no’s before getting that one yes. To be successful in today’s world you have to not be afraid. Just go for it. Your biggest critic and your worse enemy will always be yourself. I use to think I was never going to be good enough or catch eyes to break through. But here I am flourishing through lots of footwork and self-driven manpower. Don’t let people talk fear into your plans, just because their plan didn’t work for them doesn’t mean your plan won’t work for you. Remember your goals and morals, and stick by them. Believe in yourself most of all get out there and do what you love!
Amirah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I’m Amirah, but I prefer Mir. I am a strayer graduate with my AA in Business Administration(2016). I started crocheting I want to say when I was maybe 11 or 12 years old after watching my grandmother, (I love you nana!) use it as a stress reliever from long days at work. I took to it instantly, buying books, watching youtube learning any and everything I could. Today ( now 28 years old, shout out to my Pisces community), I have about 3 different brands, and 30+ hooks in my collection.
I want to say in about 2016, I decide after receiving my degree and struggling to find a stable job, I took the steps to become an LLC and officially start my dream of wanting to be my own boss. There were and still are many sleepless nights where I’m up creating content, doing research against my competition, and just doing what I love to do. Create. After much research and man-hours spent creating my first inventory Oddly-FN-Unique Creations was born… What started as just a hobby became my heart and soul. Since 2016 I have now added tie dye and hot press vinyl on top of the crocheting. Now at roughly 3,000 followers collectively in both public and private across social media platforms. I’m becoming a force to be reckoned with.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Slowly crochet, tie-dye, and vinyl are making a comeback. I definitely see it by the end of this year sales rocketing to the roof.
For years I would do my business as a fast cash deal. Make hats in bulk and take them to school. I would even sit in class taking notes and crocheting, all while working on designs. I’ve just been myself and people gravitate toward my quirky realness. I stick to my guns and push myself to be better than who I was the day before. once social media came into play lots of things helped and still continue to grow for me. It is a learning experience all the time as times change rapidly. I’ve learned to adapt and just go with it.
Any advice for managing a team?
You are your brand. On and off the clock you never know who’s watching. Your team should be a representation of your vision at all times. Remember, this is your baby choose carefully even working with family or friends. Your company needs to be respected and treated the same 25/8.
