We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amira Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amira below.
Amira, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
After beating terminal Cancer I became a competitive strength athlete. I also started coaching and wanted to open up my own facility. With no plan, no loan, just work ethic and a dream I did just that. In August of 2016 I opened up Project Sixkiller Performance.
Amira, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I wear many hats and take pride in them all. I am an Elite athlete, Coach, Business owner, Mother, and Wife. In 2012 I was diagnosed with Terminal Hodgekins Lymphoma and underwent treatments at Johns Hopkins as a Clinical Study. I beat cancer and a large reason was because of the physical health I was in prior to my diagnoses. I always wanted my outside to mirror the strength I had on the inside. I opened up Project Sixkiller Performance in 2016.
I heard a story of a Cherokee warrior named Sixkiller. He went into battle and it was just him verse six others. He came back with all six of their heads.
A phoenix is an immortal bird that regenerates or is born again from its own demise. I could not relate to any creator more. My logo, my symbol is a two-headed phoenix shaped into the form of a “6” for sixkiller. Why two heads? I believe when we die and come back, we come back twice as strong.
I provide coaching and training all the way from beginner to professional athlete.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
While Project Sixkiller. is operated by me, we collaborate with another facility called Flex gym; owned and operated by my husband Zachary Smith. I started hosting sanctioned powerlifting meets and the second one I hosted gained so much popularity I had over 500 in attendance. My space can not hold 500 people, my electric shut off as well as hvac and my sanity! I immediately reached out to another local facility who has been open since 1993 to request a meeting with the owner. Little did I know the owner at the time would become my husband. We have since then offered dual membership, hosted successful powerlifting competitions, and grew our beautiful family.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am exactly who I say I am. When you are real people see that and they gravitate to it.
