We were lucky to catch up with Amir Hossein Marvasti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amir Hossein, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I can think of two times in my life where I took a “big” risk. One was moving to America, and the other was taking a non-traditional path in medical school. A. I have to be honest, I had a comfortable life in Iran, where I’m from. I had the support of my family, and could probably succeed in pursuing any career, including medicine. In fact, my father being an ophthalmologist, would have probably paved the path for me If I wanted to take over his practice. It was actually the much easier path. But I decided to move to the states, where I had to start from scratch.
B. I also decided to take a year off from medical school, against most of the advise I got from my deans and advisors, to complete a year of research in Ophthalmology. The productivity, networking, and opportunities that this year made possible for me are still helping to advance my career. To mention few, I got into the residency of my choice and was able to land my current job all because of mentors I met in that year, and they’re mentorship.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a board certified Ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery. I initially got interested in the field of medicine because of a number of mission trips I participated in as an undergraduate student to Costa Rica. Later on I found my passion in Ophthalmology once I got to see and experience the impact an eye surgeon can have on one’s vision and quality of life. Currently I work in a private practice in southern California: Coastal Vision. Our Slogan is “Technique, Technology, Trust”. I would say we take each element of our slogan very seriously, take pride in it, and believe that is why our patients choose us. Ophthalmology is where physics and the field of optics, micro-scale surgery, and complex decision making intersect. Our vision is to attract skilled surgeons and doctors, be at the forefront of technology, and create a caring and trustworthy environment where patients feel comfortable making decisions about their vision and eyes.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Integrity. I think integrity is the foundation of any successful business, particularly a medical/surgical one.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Listening. Listening to my patients to better deliver the result that they are hoping for. Listening to my co-workers to see how I can be a better team player. Listening to my boss to see where my strength and weaknesses are. Listening to our staff/technicians to improve their work place and environment. Listening is a powerful tool.
