We were lucky to catch up with Aminta Freeman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aminta , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started making candles in 2021 but have been a candle hoarder for years! When my family dynamics changed and I became a single mom of two (my hearts), I turned to candles all the more as a means of self care. Candles helped create a safe space where I could pour into myself and replenish. I was then able to give from a place of love and overflow. As a maker, I hand craft in small batches using safe, clean ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. As a mom, I hand pour each candle with the intention of creating a self care experience for all but especially for Mothers, givers and nurturers. The Scent of Self Care.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Aminta, the owner, founder and maker of Moodie Vibes. I am a proud Guatemalan-American, raised in Brooklyn, New York and I speak fluent Spanglish ;) I’ve always burned candles but I fell in love with candles when I turned to them as a means of self care after divorcing and becoming a single mom. On a random day, I came across a groupon for a candle making workshop and attended the workshop with a close girlfriend. I felt so alive, so present and the love affair began! I launched Moodie Vibes in October 2022. I hand pour in small batches using premium, safe and toxin free fragrance oils, natural, plant based wax, natural, unprocessed wooden wicks and eco-friendly packaging. Lastly but most important, each candle is hand poured each with the intention of creating a self care experience for all but especially for Mothers, givers and nurturers. The Scent of Self Care.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In terms of social media my greatest advice is …just be YOU and the right people will gravitate. I started sharing the excitement leading towards the launch including the scents I tested, the vessels …deciding between wooden wick and cotton wicks! I love being part of community and the support has been amazing. I appreciate and the organic connections and try my best to pour back with meaningful content that may make you smile, laugh or every know and then tear up a little. Real life content and stories!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I am still unlearning Imposter Syndrome. I am getting much better at cancelling that annoying voice that says “who do you think you are …you’re not good enough to make candles and certainly not sell them.” I overcome it by literally saying out loud to myself “keep being authentic” because those that want to judge ..will do so anyway and who cares!! I have also learned that no one knows it all and no one knows the outcome of things for certain! We’re all out here winging it to an extent. In my New York accent …I am going to do ME!
