We recently connected with Aminah Banks and have shared our conversation below.
Aminah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk I’ve take in my life thus far has been relocating from Atlanta to Los Angeles to pursue my career in photography. There were many contributing factors that played a part a pivotal role in me deciding to relocate. But if I’m being honest it was a broken heart that really sealed the deal. The rose colored glasses were ripped off my face and the reality of what was going on really put into perspective how much time I’d wasted and how much I’d neglected my dreams and how much I was Pouring into a cup with a hole in it. It was a very humbling experience if I’m being honest, I had got into photography during the duration of our “relationship” and it was during Covid so you can only image where I was mentally dealing with a failing relationship, dealing with this weird pandemic, working non stop , it was a lot so Photography became thing I needed to help me shift and during the tail end if my relationship was the thing that saved my life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So, Los Angeles based freelance photographer. I love being intentional when shooting, I love to tell a story. Making bold creative choices, playing with colors and frankly allowing my imagination to run wild is what continues to drive me. I’m inspired by photographs such as Steven Meisel, David LaChapelle, Tyler Mitchell and the list goes on and on. This journey has been one of the scariest yet most beautiful experiences of my life. The fact that I made A huge step and chose to relocate to Los Angeles is something I’m very proud of myself for. I put My all into my work and I believe It shows and I always want anyone that works with my that they’re working with someone who doesn’t take the moment for granted and will go above and beyond to create beautiful images.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most beneficial things that has assisted me in the pursuit of my goals is to be aware of what it is that I’m up against and I have to ensure that regardless of how anyone may feel about me personally, you can not deny that my work is amazing! Constantly being in the state of being a sponge and continuously improving on my craft. Also, it’s never hurt to be kind to folks either lol! My focus and determination to achieve everything it is I’ve set to achieve is stronger than any obstacle seen or unseen! I’ve been through it all and I’m still here!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To be more than even I can even image.
