We were lucky to catch up with Amina Rodriquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amina , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Since the age of two I’ve had a dream of owning my own restaurant. Baking was never really my thing but I loved to eat. Like everyone else in 2020, I had a lot of free time so I started making midnight snacks for my family. Trial and error is an understatement LOL. But I realized I had a passion so I kept at it.
From that I’ve grown from rock hard batches of prepackaged cookies to a variety of made-from-scratch treats!
I grew in confidence and offered my baked goods to my extended family who loved them. They encouraged and inspired me to start selling online. I was nervous at first but I remembered my dream of owning a restaurant. I am determined and passionate about baking so no matter what obstacles, I will reach my goals.
Seeing the smiles on my customers faces when they taste the love in the desserts made specifically for them is what fuels my passion.
My Mina’s Sweet Tooth signature treat are my strawberry shortcake cookies. They’re a customer favorite and nothing like my first confections. From my velvety custom cakes to my flaky Apple cinnamon poptarts and even my fun to eat donut holes, I have desserts to satisfy different palates and dietary preferences.
My attitude of gratitude has made me successful thus far and I know Mina’s Sweet Tooth will continue to thrive because of the intention behind my treats and the support from my family and customers.
Amina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My attention to detail and my authenticity attracts the best customers and opportunities. I have many different ways I connect with my customers; online orders, pop up shops and in person pickups. I am most proud of how quickly my brand has grown and the partnerships I’ve created for myself at the age of fifteen.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Balancing school and work is tiring so when preparing for a big event I may not deliver perfection at first. But, I always get the job done! Like when I ruined 2 batches of cookies the night before an event. I regrouped and made more the day off and those cookies were the best I’ve ever had.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve learned that procrastination is unhealthy. And you should always pace yourself. My first pop up experience was exhausting. I began baking on a Wednesday and finished by cramming on a Friday. The time and energy I put into that long awaited event ended up not being worth my while. So now I take my time and don’t overthink. It takes a lot of stress off of my process.
