We were lucky to catch up with Amina Cush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy I hope to build is one that celebrates ease, compassion, and empathy for humanity. I want to be remembered not only as someone who worked to fill critical gaps in postpartum care but as a woman who cared for herself and others so deeply that it inspired others to do the same. By doing so, I hope to be a force multiplier, creating a ripple effect that impacts future generations.
When people reflect on my life and work, I want them to see someone who advocated for historically marginalized communities, ensuring that they had access to the resources, care, and support they deserved. But beyond that, I want to be remembered for embodying and spreading a sense of ease and compassion—for showing that it’s possible to move through life and challenges with empathy, not only for others but for ourselves.
If my legacy can inspire people to approach life with more care for themselves and others, and to build systems and communities rooted in compassion, I’ll have succeeded in what I set out to do. My hope is that I’m remembered as a catalyst for positive change, and that the work I’ve done in postpartum care, and beyond, continues to multiply in its impact, supporting generations to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Amina Cush, the Co-Founder and CEO of Nurture Postnatal Care, a company I built out of my deeply personal experience and a desire to fill a critical gap in postpartum care. My journey into this space was shaped by my own experience with late-term pregnancy loss, in March 2022, which changed the course of my life both personally and professionally. After our loss, we faced a fragmented postpartum care landscape, lacking comprehensive support, education, and resources. This left us overwhelmed and confused while navigating our grief. This experience deeply inspired my partner Ornan and I to launch Nurture. Our experience gave us a new sense of purpose—to provide comprehensive, culturally competent postpartum care that addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of birthing families.
Nurture Postnatal Care is designed to do exactly that. We offer a variety of offerings, including in-person recovery retreats, virtual coaching, and a marketplace that connects birthing people with trusted postpartum care providers and products. Our in-person recovery retreats offer everything from lactation consulting, mental health support to nutrition counseling. What sets us apart is that we’re not just addressing one piece of the puzzle—we’re providing 360-degree support during one of the critical postpartum period.
The problem we solve is simple but urgent: there is a massive gap in postpartum care. In the U.S., birthing people often receive around 14 prenatal visits but only one postpartum visit, despite the fact that 52% of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period. This disparity has a direct correlation to the poor outcomes that many families experience after birth. At Nurture Postnatal Care, we aim to democratize postpartum care by making it accessible, inclusive, and holistic. Our vision is to create a system where every family—irrespective of their background—has the support and resources they need to heal and thrive after childbirth.
What I’m most proud of is the impact we’re making. We’re not only providing care, but building a community. We’ve cultivated partnerships with birth workers, women-owned businesses, and providers who are as committed to inclusive care as we are. Seeing how our services have positively affected families, especially those who’ve experienced loss or trauma, is incredibly fulfilling.
For potential clients or followers, I want you to know that Nurture Postnatal Care is here to provide the support that is often overlooked in traditional healthcare settings. We’re here to walk with you through your postpartum journey, ensuring that you have access to care that nurtures your physical recovery, mental health, and overall well-being. We’re passionate about creating a spaces and solutions where every birthing person feels seen, supported, and empowered. Whether you’re seeking a recovery retreat, coaching, or access to postpartum products, we’re committed to offering personalized care that meets your unique needs.
At the core of everything we do is a deep commitment to inclusivity, compassion, and excellence. We believe that every family deserves high-quality care, and we’re here to provide it in a way that is accessible, culturally competent, and holistic. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done so far and excited about the impact we’ll continue to make as we grow.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that truly illustrates my resilience stems from a deeply personal and transformative experience: my late-term pregnancy loss, in March 2022. It was a moment that completely changed my life, bringing me face to face with immense grief while at the peak of my professional career. During this time, I realized that resilience isn’t just about “bouncing back”—it’s about navigating loss, healing from it, and allowing it to transform you in ways that create purpose.
In my recovery, I leaned heavily on my support system. I found solace in therapy, where I could process my emotions, and my trusted acupuncturist, Dr. Tracy, was instrumental in helping me release physical tension and grief. I also turned to exercise and spent time outdoors with my partner, Ornan, which gave me moments of peace and clarity. The love and support of my closest friends and family helped carry me through the darkest days, reminding me that healing is not a solitary journey.
As I began to heal, I saw a greater purpose take shape. Through my own journey, I became acutely aware of how many birthing people, particularly those who experience loss or trauma, struggle to find comprehensive postpartum care. My journey to build Nurture Postnatal Care wasn’t just a professional pivot—it was deeply personal. I applied my background in digital marketing and product development and funneled it into creating a business that could not only thrive in the market but also revolutionize how we approach postpartum care. I believe that every family deserves access to the highest standard of care, regardless of their background or circumstances, as such our mission at Nurture is to democratize postpartum care.
Reflecting on my journey, resilience, to me, is not simply about bouncing back from adversity. It’s about transforming that adversity into something purposeful. For me, that transformation became Nurture Postnatal Care—a platform where we are dedicated to providing birthing families with the comprehensive, compassionate care they deserve. This isn’t just about healing; it’s about creating a movement that ensures no family is left without the support they need during the most vulnerable time of their lives.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale has been a key part of my leadership journey, especially as a founder. From my experience, keeping a team motivated requires a mix of clear communication, empathy, and genuine recognition. Here’s what I’ve found works best for me:
Open communication is at the heart of everything. I make sure to have regular check-ins and encourage honest feedback, creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and concerns. Being transparent ensures everyone’s on the same page and prevents small issues from becoming bigger problems down the road.
I also believe in recognizing and celebrating achievements. Whether it’s a simple thank you, a public shout-out during a meeting, or a small token of appreciation, acknowledging hard work goes a long way in boosting morale. It’s important to let people know their efforts are seen and valued.
Encouraging professional growth is another priority. I’m committed to helping my team grow by providing learning opportunities, mentorship, or even new challenges. When people feel they’re growing in their careers, they tend to be more engaged and invested in the work they do.
Being an empathetic leader is crucial for me. I make it a point to understand what’s going on in my team members’ lives, both personally and professionally. Offering flexibility or support when someone is going through a tough time helps foster loyalty and trust, and ultimately boosts morale.
Setting clear expectations and goals has been essential in keeping the team focused. When everyone knows their role and what’s expected, it creates clarity and reduces stress, allowing the team to channel their energy in the right direction.
Fostering collaboration and inclusivity is something I prioritize as well. Encouraging diverse perspectives and making sure everyone feels their voice matters helps create a strong sense of belonging. It’s also important to cultivate a positive work environment where respect, support, and encouragement are at the forefront.
In times of challenge, I’ve learned that being adaptive and solution-oriented is key. I stay calm and focused on finding solutions rather than getting stuck on the problem. Leading by example helps the team remain resilient and positive.
Work-life balance is something I take seriously, both for myself and for my team. Encouraging time off, promoting flexibility, and understanding that everyone needs to recharge keeps burnout at bay and morale high.
Lastly, I’ve found that trusting my team and giving them autonomy makes a huge difference. When people feel empowered to make decisions and manage their work without micromanagement, they feel confident, which naturally leads to higher morale.
For me, building and maintaining morale is about creating a culture where people feel supported, valued, and empowered to grow. By focusing on empathy, communication, and trust, I’ve been able to lead a team that’s motivated and ready to tackle challenges head-on.
