We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amin Bradley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amin , appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I first became a doula, I took the risk of leaving corporate America to pursue more meaningful work as a doula. It was challenging and rewarding in a lot of ways. I had to rely more fully on my “why” and trust that I would be connected with the families and opportunities that need me the most.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a certified birth doula based in Chicago. Many people are unfamiliar with what a birth doula does, so I’m happy to explain. A birth doula provides emotional, educational, and physical support to individuals and families before and during the childbirth process. My inspiration for this work came from listening to the birth stories of friends and family and wondering how I could help facilitate positive birth experiences. I assist families in advocating for themselves in the delivery room, ultimately aiming to improve outcomes for Black birthing women. What started as a curiosity has grown into a passion for advocacy and purposeful change.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In this field the most effective strategy for growing clientele is to be upstanding, honest and integral. Families are trusting your guidance to help navigate one of the most important times of their lives. The good thing about this industry is that people will never stop having children, so if you’re a great doula word will get around fast about how great you are. Another piece of advice I can offer is be aligned properly with your client. If the vibes aren’t right DONT move forward with services.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I actually work with a doula collective called Chicago BirthWorks. When I was pregnant with my son, I knew that I wanted to pursue this path after leaving the corporate world. I hired a doula and she was more than wonderful to me and my husband during pregnancy. I learned alot from her about the in’s and out’s of being a doula, and she pointed me in the right direction to be certified. I’ve worked with CBC since November of 2022 and it’s been so wonderful to build community and be consistently involved in the black birth working space in Chicago.
