Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amie Bennight. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Amie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
One evening, on a cold Colorado night, two girlfriends wandered into a fashion truck at an event. The truck was filled with accessories – jewelry, bags, little gifts and goodies. It was the coolest thing the two shopaholics had ever seen. After some inspiring and encouraging conversation with the trucks owner, the two left with one cohesive thought: We are going to do this.
Just a few short weeks later, a sign. The universe presented a 1999 Chevy School Bus to the duo. Without much work at all, a plan seemed to be in motion.
We look back at this time in early 2017 as a walk together in faith and friendship, but the path very unknown. Neither of us had experience building a business. We had no capital to work from. We had no investors, only emotional support from friends and family, and the 5 young children (between our two families) that required more than most of our time and attention. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. But we dove in deep, head first.
Today, nearly 5 years later, the dream has become a reality. The business is a thriving enterprise with a full event schedule, a storefront location (opened in 2019) in historic Old Colorado City, and a slew of amazing followers that made it all happen. Covid, a $0 bank account balance, family changes and loss were significant obstacles. It was not easy. Let me say that again, it was not easy. But gosh what a ride!
Amie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Delilah’s is a gateway to on trend fashion and accessories for women of all ages. Our mission is to stock merchandise that is practical, invigorating, and affordable.
The goal, every singe day, is to help women find clothing and accessories that changes how they feel about themselves. Fashion is part of our identity – part of who we are every single day. It turns out, not everyone LOVES to shop. That’s where we come in. Helping someone find a moment, a feeling, an excitement about who they are is transformative. We are simply a guide to make that happen. And we seem to be good at it.
Julie and I built the business to be an experience. We want share the truck, the shop and our love of fashion with anyone who enters. We have and will continue to measure success by the opportunity to continue. It’s simply who we are.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
While we travel up and down the Front Range, our business is based in Colorado Springs. The community and culture of this city has guided and supported us as a small business. Businesses and business owners shine light on each other here. There is no barrier for support, endorsement or partnership. We have been lucky to garner this with some incredible mentors and partners. We truly believe that we are so much more together than alone. And we have learned that from the leaders who supported us.
Not everyone loves to shop. That’s where we come in. We work one on one with a customer to find the styles, colors and fit that make them feel and look great! It’s often items they may not have picked for themselves and (we have found) the reason why many don’t like to shop. We are hands on. We don’t have staff or employees. We work directly with every customer at every event. It’s just two girls and a truck.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth is a valuable marketing tool for us. We don’t have an incredibly large marketing budget but what we have found is that people talking and telling the story gets us the gig. And the gig is the opportunity to build more customers.
