We were lucky to catch up with Amey Goerlich recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning Improv Comedy can improve your mental health and over all well being. With everyone coming back out into the world and socializing it’s almost as if we all have to relearn how to just be. Chaos Bloom Theater provides a safe and welcoming atmosphere for people to train in Improv or just watch performances. Our small community keeps growing with people from all over Colorado looking to make new friends or just to laugh with groups of strangers collectively. Haven’t had a normal conversation in awhile? We get it and we are here to help get you back in the groove of just being again.
Amey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my comedy career in NYC at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in 2001. When i found improv comedy something finally clicked for me in the best way possible. Being a theater kid all my life this felt different and correct. I had found my tribe and i never looked back. Now 23 years later and after living in NYC and LA i have yet again found a very welcoming and comfortable place to continue my journey of bringing improv into peoples lives here in Denver. With the help of the two other amazing owners at Chaos Bloom Theater Robert Abbott and Zak Roland we have all built a fun home for people to come watch and learn comedy.
Our focus is to keep tickets and classes on the cheaper side so anyone can try it. We are committed to having high quality performances and training that you would fin in any comedy hub city like NYC, LA or Chicago (and the many other small market improv hubs).
We have so many transplant performers for the big city hubs that help to raise the quality of our shows and training. We want everyone to get on the Mainstage shows.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020 when everything shut down my husband and i took on the daunting task of leaving Los Angeles and moving to Denver to reinvent a comedy theater here in Denver. It was scary because we didn’t know how long the pandemic would last or when we could actually open to the public or make any money at all. The love i have for improv comedy and bringing it into peoples lives helped push me through the first couple years. We all spent hundreds of hours painting, building and cleaning our space so we were ready to open when we could. We worked for free, used random wood and paint we found in the corners of our space. It really was like a group of kids working any time they could to build this little world of imagination. It was probably the hardest thing any of us have ever done and i would do it all over again a million times.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing we all can do is get back to in person socializing. How ever people feel comfortable doing that we would love to be a part of it. Having an outlet to let loose and laugh can do wonders for your soul. The one thing that i love about improv comedy is that everyone in the room is experiencing something that will never be seen again. It’s an experience that isn’t written or recorded it’s the true definition of burning your art. Once it’s done it’s done. Only 50 people got to be a part of that one time experience and it’s thrilling. Supporting live performances or in person collective experiences will create a better society in general. Supporting the arts is supporting us all in the long run. Here at Chaos Bloom Theater whether you are in the audience or on stage you will feel welcomed, included and hopefully joyful by the time you leave.
