We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amethyst Green. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amethyst below.
Hi Amethyst, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The name of my company is A&A Virtual Assistance, LLC. It stands for Amethyst (my name) and Alaina (my daughter’s name). My daughter is my why behind everything I do but particularly the why behind starting my business. After over 5 years in corporate America, I walked away from a legal assistant position with one of the most successful and well known law firms in the world. After returning to work upon the end of my maternity leave in 2019, I missed valuable time with my daughter. Thankfully I was blessed enough that my mom offered to watch her for me so I didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars on daycare but I missed all of her firsts (first rollover, first crawl, first laugh, etc.) As a mom, it was extremely hard to witness all of her milestones through the phone but I felt I was making this sacrifice to give her a better quality of life. Once she started school in 2021, I was responsible for drop off/pick up while still working my full-time job. My bosses at the time (who were also mothers) weren’t too pleased with the time I was taking to care for my daughter even though all of my work was getting done and I consistently received exceeds expectations during performance reviews. One day as I found myself exhausted and stressed beyond belief at trying to juggle being a present mom and an exceptional worker, I knew I needed to make a change. I decided to transfer the skills I had acquired over the last 5+ years and become a virtual assistant. In June, 2022 I resigned from my position and dove into my business full time. I wanted to be a role model for my daughter. I wanted to display to her that in a world that tries to limit the potential of women, we can have it all. We can provide for our families AND have a successful and rewarding career.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my virtual assistant business in May, 2022. I walked away from my 9-5 legal assistant position with one of the top law firms in the world because I wanted more freedom (time and financial). I wanted power and control over who I worked with, when I worked, and how much I got paid. I took “The Prep” course with Aubree Malick as well as Tiffany King’s masterclass “VA like A Mother” in order to learn how to start my virtual assistant business. Funny enough, my first client was an amazing coach I met two years ago through social media and we simply stayed connected. When I launched my business I simply reached out in an Instagram DM and told her about my new venture and our partnership began shortly thereafter (I credit this to God who is always working things out for our good and His glory even when we can’t see it). I provide backend support to business owners to help them reclaim time so they can increase revenue and productivity. This includes administrative services such as calendar management, inbox management, data entry, and research as well as social media management such as engagement, content creation, email marketing, sales marketing, and caption writing. As a mom, I knew that I wanted to specifically support mompreneurs. The one thing I am most proud of about my business is my faith. Anyone who knows me knows I am very much a type A person. I ALWAYS have a plan. When I left my 9-5 I had ONE client but I trusted God. There were many times throughout those 5 years at the law firm that I felt God telling me it was time to move on but out of fear and contentment I stayed at a job that was stunting my growth. After trusting Him and taking the plunge to put in my resignation, that same week I gained THREE clients in my business. Since them I have been able to grow my business to 10 clients which I give all glory to God who is always working things out for my good and His glory.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me have been referrals. I remember starting out and I got my first client and then for a while I couldn’t get any clients. It can be disappointing and discouraging. After about 2 months of working for this client she reached out to let me know she had a colleague who was in the market for a VA and wanted to know if she could pass along my information. The amazing thing about referrals is that you’re not applying and competing against tons of other candidates. This person came to you specifically. I quickly grew my business from 1 client to 10 simply from referrals. It was great because I was able to focus less on marketing myself to potential clients and more on the work I was doing and how I could first have discipline to maintain my business and my current clients and next the wisdom needed to multiply and scale my business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me in growing my business has simply been staying true to myself. I remember when I was applying for a law firm position about a year ago and the interviewing attorney told me “You look great on paper but I fear that your personality will outshine your abilities. I was stunned. I have always been someone with a big smile and filled with excitement especially when I’m involved in something I’m passionate about. My first client in my business was a mindset/business coach I connected with on IG. I would always be friendly, share her business on my stories, comment on her posts, etc. and when I launched my business two years later I reached out about potentially being able to help her in her business. Every single discovery call I have been on and landed the client they said yes my skills were great but what made me stand out from all the other applicants was my energy that they could feel through our calls and time speaking together. If there’s one thing I could tell all business owners, it would to be to always show up genuinely and authentically as the person God called you to be and never waiver from it.
