We recently connected with Amethyst and have shared our conversation below.
Amethyst, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I identify as both an artist and creative. I believe they are synonymous, and they work interchangeably as my gift. As a recording artist, I thrive in creative spaces and when I’m surrounded by creative individuals. Ingenuity propels me forward. It helps to navigate my music journey as well as the message and delivery of a song.
Even so, I actually have a corporate job. My corporate line of work fulfills my passion from another channel, but simultaneously serves to help me complete my purpose. My regular job in pharmaceuticals promotes healing in a natural way. It’s more related to the physical body. My gift as an artist promotes healing from an emotional or spiritual aspect. I am constantly examining my purpose and passion to ensure that what I spend time doing aligns to my calling.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Recording Artist & Speaker. I have spent my entire life immersed in musical settings. As a seasoned musical force, singing has innately been an integral part of my life and one of my greatest passions. As a daughter of the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) church, I have been exposed to top-notch music ministry. I began singing at the tender age of 3 with my Sister, Angelyn. My Mother was my vocal trainer and Minister of Music at the church where my Father pastored. I recall being pushed out as a child to lead songs with the adult choir. I was challenged with songs like Richard Smallwood’s “I Love The Lord” and Dr. Mattie Moss Clark’s “I Thank You Lord” and “Climbing Up The Mountain”. I went on to record and lead songs with COGIC’s National Sunshine Band. For the past 16 years, I have served as Director of Music Ministry and Praise & Worship Leader for Holy Temple Cathedral COGIC in Harvey, IL.
In 2019, I emerged as an independent recording artist and released my first single “Do It” to Gospel radio. I was honored to be a supporting vocalist in 2020 on Season 6 of FOX’s hit show, “Empire”. In 2021, I released my second single, “Redeemed”, which features Grammy Award-Winning artist, Mali Music. In July 2022, I won my first Stellar Award for Rap/Hip Hop Song Of The Year for my song “Redeemed”. A few months later, I was on the first round ballot for the Grammy Awards. Most recently, I have just released my debut album, “An Amethyst Symphony”, and will be adding a Men’s candle to my luxury, embellished candle line, “Majesty By Amethyst” this Fall.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are many rewarding aspects of being an artist. It’s difficult to narrow it down just to one thing. I am fueled by my resolve that I am operating in my gifts and callings, which inevitably bless others. As an artist I have creative expression to sing songs in different ways that resonates with others. I love the fact that I am afforded an opportunity to connect with fans and listeners all over the world as well as the artistic freedom to explore various types of music, sounds and themes. Impact and legacy are also important to me, leaving a lasting mark on culture. Finally, my artistry constantly challenges me to personally grow and refine new skill sets.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by my desire to complete my purpose on earth- to edify others and spread the good news of hope and love. Artistry is an avenue in which I am empowered to do so. Last year, I lost my beloved Sister, Angelyn at the young age of 40 to sarcoma cancer. She is my guiding angel, and I have a song on my album called “Angels”, which features her voice on the track.
Angelyn’s demise reinvigorated me to seize every moment of every day and never take anything for granted. It ignited a sense of urgency to maximize my potential, dream bigger, push harder, and reach higher. When it’s time for me to depart this earth, I want to know that I did everything possible to live a full life and that I left a lasting impression that my children and grandchildren can be proud of for generations to come.
