Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amelia Player. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amelia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
When I die, I hope that my art and my writing will continue to speak for me; to maintain a reaction to my experiences and connect to others on an emotional level. I want my art to inspire rage, hope, and conversation about the degradation of women and queer voices. I aim to leave behind a catalog of entertaining, invigorating, and beautiful relics. But, what I hope, more than anything, is to leave a legacy of endless expression and exploration of feeling through a feminine perspective.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am currently in my third year at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I am earning my BFA in Dramatic Writing and minoring in Film and Television. I am concentrating on writing for the screen and the stage. Once I graduate, I hope to enter the entertainment industry as a writer. The other art forms I work in are, performance art films, sculpture, poetry, and pros. I post my performance films on my YouTube channel, amelia_dutch. And I have had the opportunity to display some of my sculptures at SCAD’s Garvin Hall. I also plan on releasing a book of poetry and a book of short stories within the next three years.
For as long as I can remember, I have been motivated to tell stories and create. From sewing my Barbie’s new wardrobes to passing out original fairytales at recess, becoming an artist has been my foremost desire. Although my work ranges in medium, thematically, my pieces tend to be connected. My art expresses dramatic femininity and strives to create a narrative and insightful reflection of our world at large.
The work I’m proudest of is the work that has been able to build community and conversation around taboo, polarizing, or vulnerable topics. For instance, my screenplay A Conversation in the Courtyard explores the often damaging ramifications religion has on women and womens roles in society and the home. As someone who is working through her own religious difficulties, it was incredibly rewarding to see the connection that was fostered between the script and my feminine presenting audience members as a result of something I had created. Moreover, the script itself was accepted into and given finalist status in The Women’s Independent Film & Television Festival, allowing for a larger audience to read and identify with the story.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What I find to be the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the inherent vulnerability and influence art has on the creator and the spectator. It’s the burning you get in your mind and body right before creation. It’s the time you lose track of when in the process and the exhale of drained relief once you’ve finished. It’s loving what you’ve made, hating it, and loving it again. It’s knowing your work has the possibility to make another person feel something, to change, or even open a mind. It’s knowing that you put all of yourself into each thing you make and that maybe it will live on after you. It’s building a community around a story, message, and feeling. It’s making something beautiful, making something grotesque, making something that can stand without you while personifying you and your observer.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Everything I create, I do so with the goal of bringing awareness to queer and feminine experiences. I want my work to shed light on the ever present impacts that the patriarchy and Euro-American-centric values have had and continue to have on our lives. I want to make vulnerable, and thoughtful narratives and sculpture that call into question our collective understanding of femininity and emotional profundity.
