We were lucky to catch up with Amelia Grant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amelia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up in a one parent household its alot of things your parent, which happens to be my mom has done right that has happen to make a huge impact in my life. I believe one of the biggest things she did was install in me the importance of my name and who I am.
My mother would always remind me as a young girl that “your name is important so be careful what you attach to your name because even though you might outgrow those things, its people who will still associate you to actions or experiences you create. I didn’t really take huge heed to the knowledge she was giving me at the time, being young it’s so much easier to be rebellious and believe that you know it all and that everyone else is just against you.
However, she was right completely right and it took me actually making those wrong choices and doing things which I thought at the time was the best thing for me, which ultimately turned out to mark my name. It took me years of correcting my name and having people view me in a different light. While I have grown and met new people who view me as who I am today, I still have those who see me as the old version of myself.
With that gem my mom gave me at a young age and the experiences I created for myself has taught me to always protect my name and business at any cost, because people will be quicker to remember the wrong you did before they acknowledge the right you. Sometimes that one wrong mistake can cost you big opportunities of growth.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For new family whose joining the journey, my name is Amelia Grant, I am the creator and owner of Sensational Aura which has now been branded out into Sensational Wellness. I also sit as the Executive Director of The Invisible Woman Foundation.
Sensational Aura was originally created in 2018 after I gave birth to my son, I had started on a natural wellness journey and came across an ancestral practice by the name of Yoni Steaming, After researching I became even more interested and felt that this was something that my fellow women needed to know about and needed to be doing for their reproductive health. For those who are not familiar with Yoni Steaming this is a service were women use to be able to squat over boiling herbs to help detoxify their vaginal areas after having children. I eventually learned more about herbs and created my own blends that catered to women needs, such as the menstrual blend that helped alleviate cramps, cleansing blend that you would use after your cycle or sexual activities, and even a fertility blend. When COVID-19 came along I found myself trying to maintain my business and ultimately having to give up my established studio space and returning back to the workforce.
Even though I had lost to me what seemed like a baby I still had the urge to do something that was catered to wellness and that’s how the rebirth of Sensational Wellness was created. I did not only want to target women, I now wanted to help men, women, and children. I studied to become a wellness coach that helped elevate others spiritually mentally and physically. That brings us to where we are now. During the process of developing sensational wellness I was still working in the medical field at the time when I was approached with the idea to help develop and grow a non profit that circled me back around to why I created Sensational Aura. This was the start of, “The Invisible Woman Foundation”.
The Invisible Woman Foundation was created to help shine more light on the maternal mortality rate the African American woman were facing in my community, we are the marked as the most highest race of women who are dying after childbirth. Not only that we are not being heard in the medical field and we are being overlooked. So of course when I was giving this opportunity I had to take it. Even though this project still developing I see big things for us in 2024 and lots of programs and resources being made more available to prolong the life of the African American woman.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would absolutely choose the same profession, my only regret is that I didn’t start a lot sooner. I allowed the idea of what other people wanted me to be for them and what others might perceive me as distract me from where I needed to be. When I should’ve been developing who I am and creating the life that I was desiring in that present time. However the experiences I had and the people I met has helped me be even better at my current profession. So I like to believe that no mistakes happen everything happens for a reason and there’s always a reason in every lesson learned.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Staying authentic has really helped me build my reputation within my market. When dealing with the community people are looking for someone they can relate to and feel connected to. Doing so actually takes being active in the community, going where the people are. I have thrown many giveaways in my community and the consistency of who I am and what I do has allow people to continue to want to see me grow but also follow me.
Sharing my story has also help build my reputation in the market, this ties back to people being able to connect with you. Women are able to hear my story and find the similarities, for some this can be their hope that they too can make a difference in the community as well.
