We were lucky to catch up with Amberlyn Bonavita recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amberlyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I want to start this off with a quote from one of my favorite authors: “No one ever ascended a mountain without risk.” – Liane Moriarty
If you were to tell me 5 years ago that at 33 years old I would be the owner of my own business, doing what I love every single day, I would have thought you were insane. I was comfortable in my career and was figuring out my work/family balance.
Fast forward to the Covid pandemic lockdown… I was home with my children and husband every single day. That’s when I realized I was sitting in the middle of the mountain. I wanted to be at the top.
I took a huge leap of faith. I quit my job and with the immense support of my husband, I started a business with my best friend and her sister. This story’s main focus is on my personal journey, but I couldn’t imagine doing it without the three of them.
So there I was, in the middle of a worldwide lockdown, leaving behind the comfortability of my job and paycheck to open an eyelash studio and hopefully get a few clients to cover the rent and be able to still contribute to my household. The past three years were far from easy, but the outcome is so worth it. I am living my dream every single day, and able to work only the hours convenient for my family. I’m doing what I love while simultaneously being able to raise my own children and not miss out on any part of their childhood.
The bottom line is this to take the risk. Work your @ss off. Stay grounded but reach for the top of the mountain, because the view from up here is so worth it.

Amberlyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started Lashes by Amberlyn “in a shared space with my two partners who also started their own businesses” almost 3 years ago, but I’ve been a lash artist for about 7 years. Growing up I never pictured myself in the beauty industry. The first time I experienced how rewarding it is to build someone’s self confidence, I knew this is what I wanted to do forever.
The relationships I have with some of my clients is the most incredible thing. Seeing these women every two weeks for an hour each time allows me to have irreplaceable relationships with women from all walks of life. I don’t just do their lashes, we experience life together.
I pride myself with using only American made products that are safe for your eyes and natural eyelashes.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
The business relationship between my partners and myself is unique. We consider ourselves partners because we all decided around the same time that we wanted to excel in the industry, and we wanted to do it together. We consist of three separate businesses who operate out of a shared space. I’m the luckiest person in the world to work alongside of two of the most motivated women I’ve ever met.
Megan (@megtheelashgirl) and I met in high school and became best friends when we got together with our now husbands, who have been best friends since they were toddlers.
Nichole (@donebynichole) is Megan’s sister and quickly became one of my closest friends through the years.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I am so proud of Lashes by Amberlyn’s reputation in the lash industry. So much hard work, continuing education and passion goes into my business every single day.
