We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Skiles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on recently is “Faceless Portraits”. I hand-draw them all and I think they are a beautiful, unique way of capturing a moment that will last a lifetime.
As an artist and digital creator, I believe that art is the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, like painting, sculpture, music, dance, and more. It requires creativity, an eye for detail, and a passion for self-expression. If you love the creative process, maybe you’ll devote your life to art.
This project is meaningful to me because it’s a wonderful example of how content and design can turn everyday photography (all those iphone pics!) into physical art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, let’s see. I got interested in art such as drawing when I was probably in middle school and that was my primary medium for a while. When senior year came in high school, my mom put me in a painting class that I didn’t want to take at first because I had no experience with painting, but if she hadn’t put me in that painting class I don’t think I would be where I am today, so I would like to thank her for that. That class gave me the confidence to experiment with other mediums.
Even though art is my passion and my spirit, I never went to college to pursue it. I am a self-taught artist in all mediums that I create within today — painting, drawing, wood burning, other DIY crafts, and more. Being self-taught can be a challenge. It can be both frustrating and rewarding at the same time, leading to a sense of accomplishment. One of the most important things that I do is watch YouTube and other online videos of artists to follow them along through their process, emulating their technique. My focus right now is to learn more each day to push myself to my creative limits and to not ever give up on my dream that I have so much passion for.
My online business is called ”Artful Xpressions,” which I independently own and run. In my shop I currently provide art prints in physical and digital formats. Most of my art products are personalized prints and there are lots of options for you to choose from… from Infant and couples, to pets and family portraits. I believe art is a way to express or capture our emotions and feelings, that’s why my work is not just about creating beautiful images, but also an attempt to capture and express who you truly are. I want my art to tell a story and for you to be able to share that with the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is seeing the final piece of art! I love looking at the final result of every artwork I’ve made. I get to see the entire picture come to life. I’m proud of myself as a self-taught creative for the hard work and time I put in, and to put it out for the world to see!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Being able to make a living doing something I truly love and am passionate about, turning my favorite hobby into a business. x
