We recently connected with Amber Sherman and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
The most innovative thing I’ve done as caucus chair is developing a scholarship for members who need support coming to our quarterly meetings or national conferences. Cost was often a huge factor in having Black representation in the room and on the national stage and I wanted to remove that barrier.
Amber, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the Black Caucus chair for Young Democrats of America, which is the youth wing for the Democratic Party. One thing I’m most proud of is that I’ve raised thousands of dollars towards our scholarship fund since I became chair and made accessibility at meetings a top priority. I’m also the first Black woman to be elected caucus chair which is a huge accomplishment.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to learn to do it anyway even if that means doing it afraid, take the risk, it’ll be worth it.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Actually listening to your board and seeing their criticism as ways to improve, not ways you’re failing.
