Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amber Scoates . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Amber thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Growing up I always loved to do my friends hair and makeup. I always knew that cosmetology would be a great career for me. While I was in cosmetology school I realized that I excelled at special occasion styling, which is definitely a niche that not all stylists have. When I graduated cosmetology school I moved into working at a salon rather than in the bridal styling field because I was so unfamiliar with how to get into the industry. I eventually started meeting the right people and working with other stylists on their wedding jobs. I learned a lot about the industry by working under others. The craft itself is always ever changing and the most important thing I was ever taught is cosmetology school was to “always remain teachable”. I am always learning from my immediate peers, coworkers and other stylists on social media platforms like Instagram.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a bridal hair and makeup specialist based out of Orlando Florida. I have been doing bridal hair and makeup for over seven years. My strong passion for my work drives me to always keep learning and bettering my craft and keeping up with all of the best and newest styles and products. I absolutely love to be able to be such a help and comfort to other women on their most special day. It’s such a blessing to be able to have a career that I love so much and I truly believe that shows through in my work. I truly care for each and every one of my brides and want nothing but the best for them on their wedding day and I have retained so many clients as friends after sharing such a vunerable and memorable day with them. I can execute a very broad range of hair and makeup styles which allows me to offer so much to my clients.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to create beautiful work that truly gives me a sense of fulfilment.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I originally started my career in cosmetology, working at a salon. I was not truly fulfilled by the work but at the time I felt like it may be a more stable income (wrong!). I eventually had to take the leap and decided to move into doing hair and makeup for weddings as my full time career. As a mother I was so scared that my income would take a hit if I couldn’t get enough work. Fortunately this was NOT the case. I took the leap, originally for my own happiness and it paid off!
