Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amber Rai. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Once I started working as a threading artist I realized the place I work at can be a happy place for people. They are happy after the service, they feel confident, they feel like a new person etc. These kinds of comments from them made me feel like I am helping the community. Obviously I am helping myself as well as this is a livelihood for me, but at the same time I am helping others, and this feeling made me motivated to start my own business.
Amber, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into this industry so I could pay my bills. I didn’t plan to have career in beauty industry, but I started to love it right from the very first day, and I will continue to love it until I get old. We do offer threading services, we do facial hair removal, brow lamination, lash lift, microblading and skincare.
I believe what sets me apart is that I listen to my clients, I always try my best to do what they explicitly ask for. I genuinely care for my clients’ well being. That’s why they say they trust me and talk to me like I’m their therapist. They say it’s like going to therapy when they come to me.
I’m proud of myself because I came to this country on my own, all the way from Nepal, without knowing anyone in the US and not knowing much about the American culture. I struggled a lot to get here, the immigration process is very tedious and unpredictable, but in the end I managed to get here. Being an immigrant is not easy in this country, and being woman wasn’t helpful either, but I’ve never given up, and that’s why I believe my life story can be motivating for other people.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Around 2019 I was trying to find a salon for sale so I could start my own business. I came across one hair salon that was on sale. I was very excited and I applied for the rent. I wanted to make sure that I get approved so I asked my husband (boyfriend back then) to co-sign for me. He happily did. Just for a short background, he is senior software engineer. He makes decent money so I was very hopeful I’ll get approved. Unfortunately, they denied my application. I was heartbroken but didn’t give up. Out of nowhere one lady contacted me and offered to be her partner in the salon business, I was so happy that finally my dream was coming true, but again at last minute things didn’t workout. At this point, I was devastated. But again I didn’t give up. Long story short, I used to work in this place as an employee since 2017 and always dreamt to have a business in melrose. And after the pandemic business was not that good so previous owner didn’t want to continue, so I took over and I made my dream come true
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
As I already mentioned I used to work in this salon since 2017 and I saved couple of thousands. Around 2018 I also started working as a caregiver so I could save more money for the business. And thanks to my husband ( was boyfriend back then) helped me with lots of things so finally I could fund my dream project. Bottom line, saving money plays vital role if you need to start a business.
