We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Pierce a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amber thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always been interested in nails. Like most little girls, I loved keeping my nails done. I can still remember the first time I had my nails professionally manicured. My mom surprised me and got my nails done for my fifth grade graduation. I saw how personalized the experience was and how it was catered to me. I remember how clean and efficient the tech was and how my nails had been perfectly polished and designed. From that day on I was infatuated with anything nail related. I had my nail milestones as I got older. I graduated from kiddie nails to adolescent to adult nails. I always wore the new techniques and would get compliments daily. It got to the point where others were asking me for nail ideas. One day someone mentioned to me that I should go to school and get certified and licensed, because I was giving my ideas away when I could be implementing them on my own clients, so, that’s what I did. I graduated within three months and got my license on the first try. I didn’t have any clientele and I desperately needed a mentor or a coach but in my area in that time it was like pulling a needle from a haystack. Eventually, I found a tech who taught me a little about the industry and it made me realize that one day I wanted to be an instructor so that I would be able to help newly licensed nail technicians who were looking for guidance and insight from an experienced professional in the nail industry.I have had so many ups and downs in this industry but one thing that I have not done is quit. I just recently became a fully licensed nail educator. After years of building up my knowledge, self esteem and having faith that I am on the right path, I truly believe that this is my calling.. I can’t wait to see what this journey has in store for The NailGodMuva and The Nailtourage!!!
Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As mentioned before I am a Licensed Nail Instructor. I am the Owner of The Nailtourage. I offer “Ivy league” nail education to future, aspiring, beginner and current nail techs. I want to dispel the myth that doing nails is a “side hustle”. The nail industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and is projected for high percentage sales within the next few years. I want to be the one who trains these nail technicians to properly setup their businesses so that they can benefit from the fruits of their labor and bring in 6 to 7 figure incomes. I want to teach them how to actually format their businesses to become successful profitable businesses.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that I am my own competition. I suffered from imposter syndrome but once I got out of my own head, I was able to see that the only thing holding me back is me. This industry can be cut throat, the competitiveness can sometimes make you feel as if you’re not good enough. The one fact that I have come to understand is that while there may be a hundreds of nail educators offering their services, I know now that that has nothing to do with who I am and how I educate my audience. I found my lane and I plan on going all the way.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I gained my reputation by being repetitive. I know that the only way for me to remain relevant is by being
R.esponsible
I.nspiring others
C.onfidently speaking my mind &
H.yping my own self up
I keep in contact, engage and repeat what they already know. Now, there is absolutely no question of who I am and what I do/offer!
