We recently connected with Amber Mykaels and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
6 Years ago I would say I was a completely different person, living a completely different life and a single decision changed everything for me. I was living in New Jersey, dealing with a lot of health issues both mentally and physically and I was in a deteriorating marriage. I just felt completely stuck. I really had no idea what I was doing with my life.
I had flown out to San Diego to meet my family for a weekend trip and I was having a hard time enjoying myself because of how unhappy I was with everything going on.
I remember sitting at Mitches Seafood in Point Loma with my mom, we were eating breakfast at the dock, watching the sea lions eat scraps from the fishing charters that had just come in. I remember sitting, watching the water and feeling total peace in that moment and I felt like San Diego was where I needed to be to be happy.
I made the choice to leave my friends and relationship, move to San Diego and completely start over, in hopes that I could live the kind of life I wanted. It was scary to give up everything I had in New Jersey, but to this day I can confidently say that the decision I made at breakfast that morning was the best decision I have ever made for myself. It gave me the chance to find new passions, be closer to family and become truer to myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been drawn to art and felt the need to be creative. In college I was struggling to find a medium that I felt would allow me to expressive. I started taking acting classes a few months after I moved to San Diego. When I moved here I told myself I was going to do whatever I wanted. Acting was one of those things I had always told myself I could never do. Acting ended up being the creative outlet I needed that let me be 100% in it.
As an actor get to live different scenarios and feel different things that you might not normally get to experience in your regular life. you also get to step away from those things and come back to reality, it was be very therapeutic.
My epoxy art is a new medium I have been working with. I enjoy the end result of an epoxy pour and like the fact that I have very little control over what happens. You have to practice patience, you have to have the ability to let go of what you want and just embrace that some things are out of your control. Working with epoxy can be very humbling.
When I create a resin art piece my color choices are usually inspired by colors in nature, usually the ocean. I like the idea that if an item has been covered in resin, it will stay that way forever. I want my resin art pieces to reflect calmness and peace, because that is how I feel when I’m working on a new project.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is being able to share what I’ve made with other people and see how it impacts them. I only just recently started selling my art work, and it has made me so happy to see someone pick up a cutting board that I made and smile with excitement. To see someone who wants to purchase a piece of art because it is valuable to them, and they want to include that piece of art in their home and their space is a very special experience.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My advice would be to be honest. There are a million accounts out there who have all the pretty pictures and all the videos with the trending audio, but those accounts are easily forgotten. You want your brand to make a long standing impact. Post the things that are relative to your brand but stay authentic. You will be most consistent in your content if you are posting what you enjoy instead of what you think others will like.
Be open, be creative, have fun with it and communicate with your audience in a positive way. Social media has become a new way for people to be digitally creative. Think of your social media account as a blank canvas and just run with it.
