We recently connected with Amber Mustain and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started working in a flower shop when I was just 16. My main job was delivering flowers, but whenever I had a bit of downtime, they let me experiment with designing. Through college, I worked in different flower shops, learning every part of the business. After graduation, I was lucky to join a high-end event company where I had incredible mentors who took the time to critique my work and teach me how to design better.
Looking back, I know how valuable it was to have someone guide me, giving real-time feedback and showing me how to bring designs to life. That’s why I believe so strongly in the power of hands-on learning. The best way to grow as a florist is to get flowers in your hands and start creating.
It’s also important to master the basics—the principles and elements of design. Understanding these fundamentals will help you create designs that not only look beautiful but also evoke real emotions from your clients. And as a florist, there’s always more to learn. Staying curious and open to growth is the key to thriving in this industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Relationships mean everything to me. Being a florist and floral educator not only allows me to spend quality time with my family but also gives me the chance to pour into the lives of my students and clients. I fell in love with this industry at 16 when I started as a delivery driver. Handing flowers to recipients and seeing the pure joy on their faces was priceless. Since then, I’ve grown from delivery driver to designer, business owner, and now floral educator. At every step, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with people in a meaningful way.
When I teach floral design, my first question to every student is, “What is important to you?” I believe that building a floral business should start with your priorities. From there, I guide my students step-by-step, helping them gain the skills and confidence they need to create the business of their dreams.
I’m so proud of every student I’ve mentored, whether through my online courses or one-on-one sessions. Each has a unique vision for their business, and it’s an honor to be part of their journey. Many of my students want their businesses to have a positive impact—whether through ministry, giving back to their communities, or simply spreading joy through flowers. It feels so special to play even a small role in making the world a better place.
I’ve been told I’m patient, kind, and able to break down complex concepts into something easier to understand. My hope is that by teaching the art of floral design, I can help create a world with a little more beauty, connection, and joy.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
When I teach floral design, I have a few heartfelt goals. First and foremost, I want to help people create! I truly believe we’re all born to create, and working with beautiful flowers can bring so much joy and a fresh perspective—especially in a world where it’s easy to get caught up in what we see or read on our devices or the negativity around us.
My second goal is to build a sense of community. I’m a big believer in supporting other floral businesses. There’s enough work for all of us, and when we feel safe sharing our knowledge and asking for help, we all thrive.
And finally, I believe flowers are a true gift and blessing. The more people who fall in love with floral design, the more joy and beauty we can bring into the world. It’s such a simple yet powerful way to make a difference, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love the people! While creating beautiful flower arrangements is so rewarding, the most valuable thing I’ve created through floral design is meaningful relationships. I’ve had the joy of meeting incredible clients, talented students, and wonderful vendors. Each connection has brought so much richness and meaning to my life, and I’m truly grateful for the community this work has given me.
