We recently connected with Amber Morgan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amber thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The creation story of House Of Morgan came from a frustration in available intention candles. They were all pre-intended with words like “love” “debt-free” etc. It felt disempowering like the power was in the candle instead of the person.
I wanted to make true intention candles that honor the time old tradition of candle burning in a way that reflects many cultures and is empowering.
House of Morgan was born out of this desire for pure intention candles. After years of testing, spilled wax, and many set intentions- we are proud of the products we offer.
Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Amber Morgan a serial entrepreneur who is love centered and community focused. I am the owner of a 92 year old floral design house & boutique, Fortin Gage, as well as House of Morgan a home fragrance company. I live in the historical district of Nashua NH in my almost 200 year old home with my husband, dog and our soon to be first child!
My favorite part of owning Fortin gage is the honor of being a part of our community in such a special way. We get to be a part of the best and hardest days of our communities lives. We say, Life’s moments told through flowers- and it’s exactly that.
Since moving back to Nashua in 2013 I’ve immersed myself in our community. Currently I chair the City’s Animal Advisory Committee, am a board member of Citizens Advisory Council, Secretary of Positve Street Art, Trustee of The Nashua Center for the Arts, and Vice PreIdent of Operation Enduring Welcome.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Despite having a global logistics background I was clueless when it came to manufacturing process, specifically scaling and supply chain.
I started House of Morgan, HŌM, in my kitchen. Since my house is almost 200 years old, the kitchen island is not even by any means. The front to back is 2degrees difference which means my candles that were first poured were so uneven. I can laugh now but man was that tricky to navigate! I went front literally pouring one candle at a time thinking I had it figured out to panicking when someone ordered 10. I discovered tips and tricks along the way from Facebook groups that helped scale over time as well as diversifying materials suppliers. I can’t even tell you how many other candle companies IG stories I would screenshot so I could google their tools later.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
While I was figuring out how to scale HŌM, I had to find a part time job that wouldn’t crush my soul and energy. (Sorry most of corporate world!) A friend said that a mutual friend of ours was looking for help and would *maybe* be looking to retire years down the road. All I heard was – part time job and possible business purchase of a place that could also sell my candles. I left that initial job interview knowing I wanted to buy this flower & gift shop. I sent a proposal to purchase the next day. I think I completely blind sided this small business owner who thought he was just getting a great part time employee! Long story short he countered with 3 years. 18 months after that first interview I was signing the paperwork to buy Fortin Gage.
