We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amber Mitch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amber below.
Amber, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started Honey Girl SkinCare in July 2019 as a hobby to keep myself busy after undergoing multiple hip surgeries following a major car accident. With two brothers who have eczema and my own struggles with severe breakouts caused by post-surgery medications, I became passionate about finding natural skincare solutions. What began as a personal project soon turned into something more when a friend with eczema asked to try my handmade soaps. From there, word-of-mouth spread, and my hobby quickly grew into a thriving business.

Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m incredibly proud of the number of people I’ve been able to help. My whole life, I’ve always wanted to make a difference. I pursued a degree in biomedical science with the goal of becoming a doctor, believing that was the best way to help others. However, through my business, I’ve discovered another way to make a meaningful impact—helping people struggling with skin conditions find comfort and confidence in their own skin. Our skin health affects us deeply, both physically and emotionally, and I’ve been fortunate to hear from so many customers about how my products have helped them or someone they love.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I personally handcraft all of my products in my home. It took me a while to perfect the recipes and achieve the right textures. Thanks to my background in biomedical science, I understood which ingredients to mix, how much to use, and which remedies worked best for different skin types. However, translating that knowledge into actual product-making was a challenge. I spent countless hours refining my formulas—sometimes even ruining $2,000 worth of product while experimenting with new ideas. But through trial and error, I finally perfected the measurements to create high-quality products with the ideal consistency. This process also helped me streamline production, allowing me to make up to 15 different body butters and 20 different soaps. Now, I can fully restock all of them in just one weekend—working entirely on my own.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the hardest lessons I had to unlearn was that no matter how much I plan, things won’t always go exactly as expected. It sounds simple, but in reality, it was a tough realization. When my hobby turned into a business, I felt incredibly lucky and assumed everything would always go smoothly. But that wasn’t the case at all.
Through the ups and downs, I’ve learned to ride the waves instead of letting them knock me down. Just because something falls through or doesn’t go my way doesn’t mean it’s the end of my business—or the world. You have to expect the worst while hoping for the best and be ready to pivot at any moment. Flexibility and adaptability are key because, in business, the show must go on.
The best part of this lesson? I discovered that I have what it takes to be a business owner. This path isn’t for the faint of heart—it’s not the fantasy world many people imagine. It’s hard work, and sometimes it’s not enjoyable. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. What a blessing it is to wake up every day and truly love what I do. I never take the hard times for granted, and I cherish every high point with all my heart
