Amber , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
This is a great story So I have more then one Buisness I own a hairshow/expo called Talent Beyond The Chair I founded this show in 2017 and was inspired by my old business partner Rico Swain when I worked next to him in one of my first shops he introduced me to barber competitions he himself had thrown a few and me coming from cosmology had already been to a big hairshow at that time in my life I had just started working for Johnny B haircare and iv always been the kinda person who takes chances on ideas so I decided to build my hairshow and from there I built my own Buisness and barbershop called Batcave Barbershop by amber Marie after opening a Buisness with Rico I felt I could accomplish my own shop and I did the name was made because when I first started I was a barber suite inside a hair salon I love Batman and a friend threw out the idea for the name and I loved it so there my barbershop was born and now I have a full running shop with employees
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been an industry professional for 14 years I started as a cosmetologist progressed to being an instructor and from there I became a barber. When I was introduced to the barbering world that changed my whole life my goals shifted from being a General Manager of Great Clips to being a platform artist for one of the biggest brands on the market ,I was introduced to Johnny B haircare. When I first started in the industry I worked for a few different types of places one was smart styles another was Fantastic Sam and then Great clips i won’t lie it was not easy when I first started almost like I didn’t learn anything in school I was only at fantastic sams for 6 months they put me through tons of training just to fire me for noting being able to cut hair very good (or so they said) funny thing was as hurt as that made me they turned me into a beast from there on I was unstoppable I became a short hair specialist and helped run great clips for awhile till one day I said I need a change because I believe in the saying live uncomfortable because if your comfortable your not making moves so I took the big jump into booth rent and officially became a barber when I started my barbering career I was already working for Johnny B haircare and I went very far in that company being the first female lead barber on stage with another female as well as being there first ever tier 1 educator as a female barber I was on the main stage at the Texas world fair and also accomplished my expo 3 times going on my 4th also currently working on my second location as well as my cosmetology/barber school
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Owning any business is not easy i have had so many lessons learned last year when I had my hairshow I almost lost it and just threw in the towel talk about stress I couldn’t function at times with the stress I was under to achieve such a big show for me when the weather was trying to get me through me almost being shut down due to weather to my host almost not making it to my catering not showing up and my backdrop stuck in a freeze I made it and it was a huge success and o lord let’s talk about my barbershop having employees can be such a blessing and a lesson iv learned that as an owner to keep good employees you have to pick your battles and make sure that communication is open and healthy be open minded to your employees corrective criticism and don’t be lazy be there for them as best you can and make sure and state your standards before hiring
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
So I have a unique barbershop not only is it called the batcave my shop is also a big cave inside on the walls is a beautiful mural of the bar mobile and my whole outside from one in to the other is Gotham city but that’s not it my shop also caters to autistic children my shop was built for me but definitely attracted children my puzzle piece on the door drew attention and became my signature I am most known for handling more difficult children or kids with autism or any disabilities I’m extremely knowledgeable of behavioral therapy and have designed a method to being able to accomplish a good haircut and allow the child to feel safe and calm to shit in the barber chair it’s not always easy but I love what I do and because I have helped so many families word of mouth and parents recommending my shop I have employees who benefit from my marketing iv been picked up by news stations and big city blogs I help the community and they help me
