We were lucky to catch up with Amber Korban recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amber thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
My family loves to travel! Asking them to support my Travel Business was easy. It was natural to ask my family if I could start planning their next cruise or flight. I explained that I could get them insider deals and discounts. It was also great practice for me. Booking international is different than domestic.
I feel like you should ask your family to support you, if your product works for them. Obviously selling wine to your sister that is alcohol free is bad business. But if they would use your services with someone else, why not ask to use your business or product instead?
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am aa Travel Agent with Amber Korban Travel Co. I am an agent and my agency is Evolution/ Archer Travel. I choose travel for a few reasons.
I wanted a part time job where I could work anywhere, anytime. I get in what I get out with this business.
There is a lot of free and cheap training out there for travel agents.
I personally love traveling. Everyone should try to fit travel into their life. Even if it’s a just a short road trip through your state. You learn a lot about history and culture with travel. Or you can travel for your mental health and just relax. Travel can fit all budgets if it’s planned far enough ahead.
My main reason I became a Travel Agent if for my kids. Two of my children have a genetic condition where they will eventually loose most of their eyesight. I want to give my family the opportunity to see different places before this happens. These images and memories will forever be with them.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I hired a part time marketing specialist to do most of my content and help me out. When I am too tired to consistently make posts for social media, my marketing specialist is there to make sure it gets done. I highly suggest working with one to get your product or service out there!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Early on in my career, before I had children, I really wanted to be an office manager at a big business. I wanted to work all the hours and I wanted a title. Once I had children, everything has changed. Affordable childcare is hard to find, school schedules are all over the place. As a mother, I have had to pivot frequently. I think that one route I choose with my career will work, then it no longer fits my family’s needs. Or Covid hits and your life really changes when your children are home, when they are supposed to be in school.
Instead of give up and not have any career. I have had to reinvent what works for me. Right now, being a Travel Agent works great with my schedule and plans.
I also choose to specialize in Family Vacations, International and Domestic Travel, and Special Needs Cruising.
