We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amber Kenni. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amber below.
Amber, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I absolutely would have started my creative career sooner, and I would have taken it seriously, I spent loads of time feeling insecure about wanting to pursue a career with no guarantee of lucrative income for fear of outside judgement. I always knew I wanted to be on TV with my own show, however, through the years I essentially forced myself to want to pursue safer more reliable professions. I dropped into a deep depression as a result of constantly feeling lost and confused about where I was heading in life. So in retrospect, I would give younger Amb a pep talk to let her know that her assignment is to help change the culture through her passion and purpose and encouraged her to live her life for her way earlier.
Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a self-published Author, Actress, Model, Podcast Host and Motivational speaker, hailing from the beautifully lush state of North Carolina. I also holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Public Relations and Organizational Communication, from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Bowie State University, respectively. My passion for inspiring hope started in 2011 after graduating from high school and having a tumultuous time throughout. Having been bullied from the age of 5 until I graduated high school, I often speaks about how this shaped her perspective of myself for years after, until I decided to start myself-love journey. This inspired me to write and publish my beginner’s guide to embarking on the journey of self-love and acceptance, entitled The Mirror of You! I am now has an audience of over 200,000 supporters on TikTok and a growing Instagram following, which I plans to use to continue to inspire people to dream big and go where they’re celebrated! Soon after I began her podcast called “Hey Baby Live,” formerly known as “Heal(T)” to provide a safe space for Black women to feel celebrated for their whole selves and not tolerated. Kenni also works as a brand consultant to help other brands and businesses strategize their social media and provides them with resources to set them up for success.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Fun fact, my content creation journey started over 10 years ago. It took me more than I decade to garner the audience that I have today. My earliest videos on YouTube are about dating and relationships. Over time, as a learned more about what’s important to me and how to connect with my viewers, I was constantly trying new things with my content. I had to be willing to reinvent myself and my message and that took a lot of soul searching and dedication. I can remember times when I wanted to give up because no one was watching the videos I would produce, my scripted web series Officially Adulting didn’t turn out how I thought it would etc. These things are devastating and every content creator has faced them in one way or another and it takes an immense amount of grounding and centering oneself to stay focused on the main goal which for me is impacting the world in a positive way, and not getting caught up in the algorithm. I had to get out into the real world and impact the lives of the people I interacted with on a daily basis. I had to become a more clear version of myself for my vision to become more clear and when I focused on that more than anything else, my audience began to grow exponentially.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
The mission that drives me is inspiring people to always go where they are celebrated and not where they are tolerated. As someone who was a victim of bullying throughout middle and high school, I know what it’s like to feel outcasted, take advantage of, mistreated and abused. Therefore I’ve made it part of my life’s goal to uplift the “underdog,” and encourage them to believe that they are and have always been enough. I want to spread the message that loving yourself enough to cancel out the noise of negative thoughts and perceptions of others and taking a chance on yourself despite those things is true freedom. It’s not a journey for the faint of heart, but it is one that is worth it if you are willing to do the work to impact the world in a big way.
