We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amber Hutchins . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amber below.
Amber , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Hutch House Interiors is a new company I launched a year ago out of a heart to not only help people with decor and design in their homes.. but also, to find the beauty that’s around them. I specialize in using what clients already have to bring a fresh, updated look. My mission is to show people you don’t have to break the bank, or fully renovate your entire house to have warm, inviting spaces. With a little creativity and care there’s a whole lot of change that comes from simply repurposing, repositioning, and reimagining what’s right in front of us.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always loved decorating. But more than just decorating I love working with what I have. It’s a creative challenge for me to walk into a space and try to come up with something that’s even better. I know 100% I got that from my mom. I grew up in a family where we didn’t have a ton of money. Our home wasn’t big or fancy but my friends always commented on how pretty it was. That’s because my mom had a gift for taking the most ordinary of things and making it look special and unique, even expensive. I remember her telling me that pillows add warmth and a throw blanket positioned just right can make any couch or chair look better. I took that into my adult life and have always loved shopping my own house first before buying things to try to come up with the look I’m wanting. Through the years friends would ask me to help them with decorating – whether their homes, parties, weddings, special events. When my husband and I started Hutch House Properties three years ago, a renovation/ house flip company I found myself moving into the design lane more. And the passion I’d always had to work with what you have began to grow. I loved the idea of helping others achieve what they were after with budget friendly, creative repurposing. And so, Hutch House Interiors was born. There’s no greater feeling than seeing the look on someone’s face when they walk into a space for the first time + see what you created. I love it so much I’d do it for free haha! That’s how I know it’s what I was meant to do. It’s not just decorating, it’s helping others see the beauty that exists in the simplest of things. I would like to think that’s what sets me apart from bigger franchises – the ability to notice the small stuff. And take the time to get it right! I won’t walk away from a project until I’m completely satisfied with it. That’s how important every job is to me. It’s personal, because it’s an extension of who I am.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would say the goal driving my creative journey is two- fold.
First of all, to help others achieve not only beautiful spaces, but spaces of peace. You can have the most elaborate home with state of the art everything .. but if it doesn’t calm you. Bring you a sense of settling and contentment then what good is it? And yes, I believe that “feeling” can be created through colors and textures and spaces that invite and warm the soul. A place where others too sense that and feel safe + at home. Think about that.. a home doesn’t feel like a home simply because it is one. A home is created by the spirit that fills it. And many things factor into that. But the blank canvas we begin with is the space itself. Layering it with pieces that become the foundation to build it into not only what we want it to look like, but what we want it to FEEL like.
And secondly, what drives my creative journey is wanting others to know you’re never too old to start! I’ve wanted to do a business like this for years but let, mainly, fear stop me. As I approached my 50th birthday I thought, “it’s now or never!” You can’t wait until you feel ready, because you’re never going to. Sometimes you just have to jump in the deep end + start figuring it out. I tell my kids often that everything in life is changeable .. you can try something + change your mind. That’s okay. You’re allowed to do that. But, you won’t know whether it’s for you or not until you try. So, that’s where you start. Just try!!!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My personal Instagram the.hutch.house grew through simply sharing my life + being real + open about my journey. I’m still working to grow my business account Hutch House Properties … but I know what needs to be done, it’s just applying it haha. But I wanted to share some of those thoughts here for accountability to myself but also to help others who are new to social media or just trying to get a business started. Remember, YOU are your brand! Whatever your job description is, at the end of the day, people choose you based upon the connection they feel. So as awkward as it can be at times you have to be willing to open yourself up a little + share. And you don’t have to put overly personal things out there but you do need to let others in on your journey. Especially as small business owners – we benefit from hearing others stories. Learning from each other. And not being afraid to share not only successes but mistakes as well. It’s been my experience that people gravitate to what feels real + authentic. You can be talking about paint colors with someone you just met + suddenly you’re sharing parenting stories + laughing at a similarity you have. Human connection is a beautiful thing. It’s what life is all about. Our avenues of work just give us the opportunity to do that in the coolest + most extraordinary ways. And social media has become the platform to share all that in a broader sense like never before. To build a great “audience?” Just be real!
