We recently connected with Amber Hill and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think success is quite subjective. A close friend of mine recently divorced her husband and said that her marriage was successful. Of course, when she said that, I pursed my lips and squinted in confusion but she went on to explain that she successfully got two children from the union. So although the marriage ultimately failed, she still regards it as a success.
Now, I can’t help but to view success in a similar way. Successes can come from “quote unquote” failures too. As long as you learned something important, made a connection with someone or it prepared you for the next step to grow.
Amber, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m only truly passionate about a handful of things and design has always been at the forefront of the list.
I started Hill House Designs in May of 2021 with the mindset to offer one of a kind designs for all budgets. My agenda has always been to make good design accessible to everyone that appreciates it. It doesn’t take thousands upon thousands of dollars to curate a space that is inspiring, peaceful and most importantly, YOU! I also don’t believe in the one size fits all approach to interior design that social media shoves down our throats. I always take the time to learn about my client’s lifestyle, interests and needs before I create a design for them. From my sweetest residential clients here in Buda, TX that are traditional, outdoorsmen and wine lovers to my Raleigh, NC apartment renovations, my designs are intentional. I look for pieces that have meaning or represent a time and/or place of importance.
Over the past two years I have worked on both Residential and Commercial projects, both big and small, with a few virtual projects sprinkled in there too. My “JOB” never gets old because I love it!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivot. I love that word. It’s one word that has been a constant in my career.
Interior Design is all about the flow and feel of a room. Sometimes I’ve chosen a piece for a room that I thought was perfect on-line or in the store but once I placed it in the client’s space, it was not to scale or the wrong hue of blue. “PIVOT!” Yep, if you’re old enough to catch the reference, I see Ross screaming at Racheal and Chandler every time. And it’s much like that.
Every single installation has required a pivot and that’s normal. The key is to remain calm and act quickly.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Welp, this is a sore topic because I was just hacked on Facebook so I’m starting over.
I will say that posting often enough to stay relevant but not too much that you lose followers, is a fine ‘trapeze like’ tight rope.
When I started my business, I ran contest with the whole ‘like and share’ then win ‘something” route.
It did NOT work. My followers came from friends and as my business grew, referrals.
My advice: Post what you like, what is relevant and feels good to you. I think just posting real life works too. You’re followers want someone that is human and relateable.
